Another big advancement today, finally got around to registering it.

Biggest excitement, I was able to get "1966 SII" on legacy plates for the personal plates to the rig!

Wasn't expecting those to be available.

Little late with last weekend updates.

But more painting going on and liking how it's coming out.

Some runs here and there so fixing that, also did a touch up when it was too cold. Learned the hard way there and had to resand.

The 60 year old alluminum isn't the smoothest so dealing with some imperfections, but it's a trail rig.

Dropped off remaining last parts for lt230 to Scully. Once that is back I'll begin the drive train final assembly.

Also bought new accessories parts that I need to install.

Found a bit of a unicorn, the pickup cab that I'll run when it's not summer.

I fear I may have to say goodbye to my Range Rover Sport with the growing number of problems becoming increasingly cost prohibitive to maintain.
    Basics
2006 RRS 242k original miles NCLR014 many offroad miles mostly with this club. Regrettably ditched the air suspension for coils years ago cuz it woulda cost double to keep air suspension. Showing its age
Since January, I'd been back to Cerrone's 3 times with engine faults. Codes would show a misfire - each time on a different cylinder. Each time they'd replace ignition coils under warranty no problem except last week, this was Tyler's observations
Misfire is gone however the vehicle drives extremely poorly. Has a violent surge coming the the transmission mostly likely the Torque converter failing. Also has a very loud Drivetrain noise coming from either the transfer case or one of the Differentials or both. Vehicle also blew a bunch of smoke when we started the car after letting it site in the morning meaning it is most likely burning some oil as well. Vehicle has very high mileage with as bas as the transmission and that noise is I am not sure how much longer it is going to drive like that before having an issue
I knew the torque converter was a ticking time bomb, but the undiagnosed transfer case/diff noise and smoke is new. Repairing any of these alone exceed 2x/3x the vehicle's value 😭 I'd hate to part it out, but there are some usable goodies/unobtainium on there.

Julias birthday was on Friday and we were unable to make it to the dunes or moab with everyone but i couldn't let the weekend pass without some camping.  just about an hour away from our home is Dixie Valley where the us navy does training.  As a result there are tones of old abandoned homesteads and tanks scattered around the area. We spent the weekend wandering decaying buildings, tanks, and army trucks.  The weather was nice but a bit cold at night, all in all a good trip that if anyone wants to recreate someday id be happy to make a trip.

Assuming I have the 18th off I'll be there!

    Update:
I will be there! Will bring the D2 and hopefully drag a friend or too along with Cassidy. I'm planning on stay for the day. Its about 2 hours from where I am and actually made it to the meeting spot yesterday when I went skiing. There are a lot of fire roads in the area, one of which runs through the backside of the ski resort and is groomed. I'll likely explore those if there's extra time!

Welp, since I am scheduling myself to "work" the Taproom on a weekend, I might as well have some fun!
East Brother Beer Co is having a vendor day. We will have about 6 vendors (arts n crafts n such) setup, as well as 2 food trucks - Cambodian Food and a Smashburger... Obviously, there will be beer available, and I will have a special club discount on beers for the day.
Tap List - subject to change
    - The Core Beers: Bo Pils, Red Lager, Blonde Ale, Gold IPA, Red IPA, Oatmeal Stout
    - Seasonal Specialities: Belgian Tripel, Maibock
    - Taproom Only: German Pilsner, English Pale Ale, something in the beer engine (cask ale)
Time: Let's shoot for lunch, noon - 4p.
Other: The club has some new t-shirts and the two boxes have been sitting in front of my desk for a few weeks. Rumor has it that all current members will be getting a new shirt, but I will let the Board confirm that!
I'll hit up some of the regulars with Rovers to attend. I am also toying with the idea of a Parking Lot Party for us for the day if there are enough committed interest. We have a somewhat hidden area that we could park the rigs and admire with beers in hand. the downsides are: food trucks and vendors will be a walk, and I may need to limit the tap list (considering setting up the Tap Wagon or can pours in the "secret" area. Otherwise, I can reserve a few tables/area for us.
The secret area also has a forklift ramp, that we possibly could do some flexin' for the grams. Or just rollout the forklift...
Where: 1001 Canal Blvd, Richmond, CA 94804
    - if we post up in the Taproom Unit C-2
    - if we circle the wagons, Unit B

    Cheers,
    Paul

Made it to Arnold! Two hiccups of getting warm coming out of the bay, and again on a long slow grade. I have  a heavy trailer, pulled over and let it idle and cooled in 5 minutes and I carried on for 100 miles no issues. The rest of the day no issues on the slow grade coming up from angels camp
Checked out underneath when I got here to discover gear oil leaking between the t case and transmission. Rear rubber drive line bushing is toast. Topped it off once and it's now clean oil everywhere.... up the creek lol

The engines happy! I've had to adjust the CPS and tone ring on the harmonic balancer once. Had a miss

Super behind on this thread... : (...
Back on Friday of last week, the winds finally won and finished what the winter storms started. The driveway tree came down mid-trunk.

Johann, using his brute strength carried it up the driveway while I spotted him with the LR3...
We used the skid steer for the remaining cleanup and afterwards did a flex check.

    Rad flex bruh.

    Hey all!
Quick overnight trip South East of MNF on what should be a quite easy trip just to get out and enjoy some nature.
I've not run these trails previously so we can all learn together
Here's the plan for Thursday 3.14 into 3.15:
Meet on 3.14 at 900A at Natomas Crossings Walmart on Truxel then head to Stonyford where we'll eat lunch.
Run that West then South to Hough Springs.
Head East to find camping before Indian Valley Reservoir and set up camp.
Next AM on Friday 3.15 we head East on Bartlett Springs Road before hitting Walker Ridge Road.
Head South on Walker Ridge Road stopping along the way for lunch.
Continue out to CA-20 then East towards I-5 and home.
If you plan to join please LMK via call or text so I can wait/look for you!

Would it be worth changing the ratio if it needs to be rebuilt or keep it currently stock?

Side question, would the people switch to a Borg Warner over the LT230? Not sure if thats even possible in a D1

The BW case could be installed, they came passenger drop on RRC’s so they would fit fine. They are not locking like the LT230 so most people go the other direction and swap the LT230 in place of the BW. If the vehicle has aspirations on tougher off-roading then the LT230 would probably be preferred. Although I have heard of some people liking the limited slip BW case over the LT230 with selectable lockers since it’s gives a little less transmission wind and the ability to totally lock up the axles mitigates the issues of not having a locking tcase

If you switch to the BW you will need new drive shafts as the lengths won't directly fit so becomes an added cost.
On the ratios,  D1 comes with 1.2 high range and stock 3.32 low.  You obviously can change both and I even have a 1:00 high range if you wanted to go that direction. Heck could probably sell you the TCase and seal kit I have with it.
It would give more mileage on flat ground but be a little more gutless on mountain climbs like up I80.
So there is a 1.4 and 1.6 option from the defenders which will allow it to have more gusto around town and kill some mileage.  Those are also cross-cut gears so louder, some early D1s had the 1.4 stock.
The more interesting is the low-range gears,  you can get 30% reduction which is 4.3:1, and 50% which is a 5:1.  Don's D1 has the 30% and seems ideal with the automatic trans.  I believe Mike Foster's D90 w/ manual has the 50% and definitely helps there.

Are those metal chucks or rubber?
If you got time id rebuild it at the same time you can upgrade it to a HD cross pin or even a atb .Rebuild kits are around 135 plus shipping from Ashcroft .If you need it done im sure Tim Scully could do it or Matt Jackson down is paso does good work.

This is my suggestions,  used ones are around $300 and you really won't know what you have and it will likely leak so you'll be wanting to at the least a seal refresh.

In preparation for the upcoming long haul trips I've begun to burn down the issue list on Snowflake.
    The easy ones:
Cleaned out the truck and removed the old V1 sleeping platform (now Obsolete - Thanks Henry!) Removed the original 2nd row fridge mount and re-installed the 40% seat Took a bunch of measurements for the new fridge to be installed in the rear. Ordered fridge slides. Installed missing screw on driver side cup holder.  Tightened up the very annoying Safari Gard rear bumper (again). Oil & Filter Change (20W50 VR1 w high zinc content) Reconditioning the attachments on the 3rd brake light The not so easy...
When we got back from the Shaver Lake Snow Run I unloaded, and backed it up and out of the way. Out of the way means up on slight hill with the nose pointed downward.

A few days go by and I go to start it, we've got spark, and air but no fire. Considered for a bit that it may that the fuel can't be reached by the pickup due to parking angle and low fuel.
The next day I added about 10 gallons of fuel, same result.
Fast forward to today. Johann and I pulled Snowflake down to the asphalt and maneuvered the nose into the garage with a gentle push from the skid steer (the spare tire coming in handy as a bucket bumper). Out of the rain we begin going through the "no-start" electrical tests in the workshop manual.
Tests 1-4 are a lot of multimeter work. Wired connections pass. The coil... mostly passes. There was a brief moment where there was doubt, but a second test showed the coil was good. Test 5 now requires access to the distributor pickup. On many of Classic motor configurations, you are unable to access the port without removing the entire distributor as the spark amplifier cannot be removed in-situ.
Before I tore into this, first, I made a jumper between the coil and spark amplifier to rule out a connection issue. No start. Remove the jumper.
As a last resort, I pulled the new spare coil and hooked it up. START!
Interesting... so it must have been the coil we think.
Return everything to the original state as we were going to video-document going through the test procedures as the internet was fraught with mis-information and no good videos of these tests being ran in order. Start filming the symptoms... but Snowflake was camera shy and FIRED RIGHT UP...
Spent the next hour jiggling connections, re-testing, examining connections and wiring...  We could not re-create the issue. So, I'll just chalk this one up to Rovers being Rovers and the new coil is back in the trail spares kit until next time...
