So that is the initial plan - I will work out a tentative route by Wednesday.

Can I get a headcount of folks planning on attending and if they hope to head down Friday afternoon or Saturday morning?

I plan to come. Will drive out on Friday, but not before 6pm. This is assuming that the camping site is within ~4 hours (no traffic) from here.

some of us locals plan to do this April 8/9/10 also @ the south end there is a primitive camp site called Selby which has a vaulted toilet and nice sheltered overhang spots with picnic tables (really nice)  there is good mountain biking @ Caliente ridge trail also.  I may come out there this  Sunday to mountain bike and hang out though. there will likely be a lot of mud out there but is seriously fun.

I wish we could make this one its just a bit of a haul for a Saturday and we might be trapped on this side of the hill. But take lots of pictures and we can't wait for the next one....and some spring weather.

It's bitchen out there. I am in the midst of a nasty flu and not sure I will recover in time... PLUS I am supposed to play a piping gig on Saturday mid-day.

Pic of Selby camp attached/embedded.

Have fun,

Paul

Looking at weather here was probably a wise move to reschedule/cancel Bowman Lake.  This trip is a little too far from Reno though (about 9 hrs in my truck) so we won’t make this.  Hope everyone has a great time!

Hopefully we can catch you next month at Bowman Part Deux!

Likely I'm out; was going to have to make it a 1-day run as Michele is basically flying home, doing the trip, then flying away again.  This one is a little too far for a 1-day though it would be a good shake-down for the RR I suppose.

Carrizo Plains Trip Itinerary - A Rough Plan

The goal of this trip is to setup a base camp Friday night at Selby Campground. Selby has vault toilets, firepits, and picnic tables.

(No water or trash services - Pack it in, pack it out)

Saturday and Sunday we can leave our camps setup and bop around the plains at our leisure.

Departures

  • Two Groups will leave from the Bay Area, an early afternoon and a late afternoon. Feel free to setup rendezvous points if necessary (I will add one for Group 1 folks if we gain more peeps), post up if you want to head down in a group.
  • Group 1: 2:00PM Departure
    • Miles, Theresa, Henry - Snowflake, RRC
  • Group 2: 6:00PM? Departure
    • Sasha?
    • Robert?

Itinerary

Friday, March 10th - Home to Selby Campground Basecamp

  • Approximately 4-4.5 hours from the South Bay Area
  • Address: Selby Road, New Cuyama, CA 93254
  • Coordinates: 35.12792907702096, -119.84167814396167
  • image.png
  • Plan A - Camp at Selby Campground
  • Plan B - Camp at KCL Campground
  • Plan C - Dispersed Camping near KCL. Dispersed camping is not allowed on the plains, we will be headed up West a bit into the Hills if this happens.

In all plans, I will have my cell and radio on. Reach out and we will find you. Or send a pigeon.

  • Cell: 402.741.0231
  • Radio: 146.460 MHz .

Saturday, March 11th - The Carrizo Plains Clockwise Tour! (Assuming we are at Selby Camp)

  • 09:00 Camp Roll-out
  • 09:20-10:30 Head up to the Goodwin Ranch Education Center (This is an excellent point to meet anyone coming down early Saturday morning)
    • I've got a few questions of historical nature and to get the latest road conditions
  • 10:30-11:30 Drive over and check out Saucito Ranch
  • 11:30 -13:00 Lunch at Soda Lake and Viewing Area -
  • 13:00-13:30 Wallace Creek Site and short trail... It's not my fault, but we gotta shake it up with a short walk.
  • 14:30 - End - We will attempt to take the drive up Temblor Ridge Road, this is a primitive road so should be fun after all the rains, if this fails we will tour down along the maintained Elkhorn Road.

Sunday, March 12th - Light Touring / Head Back

  •  For folks that wish to, we can swing over and check out the following:
    • KCL Campground and Ranch Site (Kern County Land Co.)
    • Van Matre Ranch - Wheat Harvests primarily
    • Travers Ranch - A large collection of old implements

Around noon or so, I expect folks will begin to trickle back up North on the roughly 4 hour drive.

And bonus... if we can find Mary Wynne Nance Morris while we are out there... she has alluded me both times I've been down in the Monument. More on this if we find her.

The above is just an outline, if we dawdle because we like something, or get ahead because it just didn't take so long, great! That is all part of the journey - it is your trip ; ).

There is an old runway at the Goodwin Ranch... just divert the flight for an important pickup  : )

WOULD love to go see Painted rock but it is now "a book online entry"  it starts @ the goodwin ed ctr which is never open either (hope it is this weekend)

Yeah, I tried to book this, but they did not have any openings this weekend. They did for next weekend! There are other times of the year where you can do a self-led tour with a permit.
