In past years the registration will be at camping area just make sure you have already sign up online . So far for me is to drop off the trailer at the end of trail {Tahoma} Thursday  and make it to camp Late afternoon. Is anyone else dropping off a trailer ? Also do we need extra propane for campfires?

I don't have a propane pit, but they are always nice to have!  I'm leaving a car at the Tahoe side and driving back around too.

    Hi Valentine,

Looking forward to seeing you up there and thank for registering to come!

We'll be meeting everyone at the loon Lake spill way.

Here's a description of where we'll be camping and the registration table.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Many thanks. Don;t think I'll be able to make it until Friday morning, but in case I can get out on Thursday, which camp ground are people staying at?

We disperse camp right on the trail, about 500 yards from the Rubicon Trail Foundation Kiosk.  So can drive into us as it's a short run or you can park at the staging area and walk over.

On Friday however, we begin heading down the trail from 8am until 2pm so get there early if you want to see us head out.

Still openings if your rig meets the requirements,  but sign up soon as we'll be building the groups this week.

  4. Friday night shop time yielded a completed cross member, notched for front drive shaft clearence and a L shaped bracket to support the transmission and transfer case weight!

Next I'll need to add a bracket to passenger of the cross member that connects to the OEM transfer case plate just to make sure it has support the torque.

But the drive train is fully supported now, which makes this the best picture to date of the build...no jacks or rachet straps needed for the moment!!

In addition to finishing this, I've been messing with getting the series steering box out... Tyler, Don and now Jason have all helped.

Today we set the frame on support so it didn't flex on the suspension and used wood blocks as pivot points for the pry bars.

  5. Is set-off 7 am on Friday 8/25/23 and is it from the Loon Lake Staging area?
I'm not ready to participate this year, but I'm looking to come watch folks heading out.
PS Sorry if I've missed these details posted elsewhere

You are right, first leaves around 7/8 and last is around 2ish.

We camp Thursday night so welcome to come out Thursday night and hangout for both days.

We have lots of details on rovicon.org and always here to answer questions!!

Anyone want to caravan from the Bay Area?    Do you all typically leave Thursday night, or Friday morning?

Ideally, you come up Thursday when you can, camp and take in the incredible scenery...then we start running groups Friday morning.

If you can't make that work, just let us know when you'll be arriving so we have a group for you to run with on Friday.

If we have enough interest, could do a run down to Uncle Tom's on Thursday night.

  7. So one project that has been a challenge is the mount setup for the transmission and transfer case.

Originally looked at using the rw-eng mounts. However I'm using the sm420 and lt230 and it needs some clocking towards the passenger side which makes the mounts not bolt in as is.

After lots of brain storming with Jason Husslemen, a friend from the Snail trail podcast crew landed on 2"x4" box tube as a new cross member that then has an attachment to the Dana 300 adapter I'm using between the lt230 and sm420.

I'm using the factory lt230 mount on the passenger side and connecting that to the cross member too.

So similar to the factory setup with a transmission and transfer case mounts.

This plate also gives me a place for mounting skid plates and also works if I swap to a different transfer case one day.

One cool part is that I finally bought a welder, so learned how to weld and also fabricate plates, sleeve the frame in this process!!

    First weld on the right!!

I had some reservation on the welder, titanium 170, but with lots of great reviews and then getting Jason's professional welder feedback it's definitely a great value option!

Next up, finish welding the cross member together.

Then onto other core systems like break and fuel...

  8. Speaking of trails, white pines has a couple ohv parks north of it, and a popular venue , blue mountain events center, a short ride up the logging roads. Just throwing more future trail ideas out there! I haven't explored them much myself and it would be nice to have a second vehicle if not more

    Interesting, haven't heard of them!

I know are fire roads for days...Nick and I use to explore with the kids years ago.

    Great recap!!

I'm hoping to make this event one year!!

On the conversation of radios...My Off Road Radio is run by Tyler who's done some ham classes before. Might be something to organize again.

But also he does radio programing for the common used frequency and repeaters we are likely to use.

He has some great radio reviews that help with purchase decisions.

I've used this one a couple times and it's affordable.
