So I want announce the June MORG that I will be leading. It will be the second weekend (6/7-9) of June instead the traditional first weekend. That will give folks going to the PNW event a weekend to rest. This is an excellent trip and good warm up for the summer rock crawling season. Camping plans are still up in the air, but I wanted to at least give the dates and trail plan so we can all cancel the children’s baseball tournaments with plenty of time to spare. This thread will be updated.
This MORG will be an overnight and a rock crawling trip. Non rock crawlers can still come and have some fun though. There are plenty of dirt roads and overlanding opportunities in the surround area, not to mention we will be camping near some really nice lakes. I will be leading the run down Hell Hole Jeep Trail, but anybody is welcome to plan and lead a run on some of the surrounding trails and forest roads in the area.
The plan is usually to camp at French Meadows, but another late winter has that campground closed again. The option we used last, Stumpy Meadows Campground, is also currently closed. Luckily we did find a really cool campground on the way to the trail from Stumpy Meadows. i don’t have the coordinates / address, but I am sure someone here has it pinned from last year right? Please share if you do. I haven’t had any luck contacting the Forest Service yet, but I should have more concrete plans later on in the week which will be dependent on potential June openings.
You ask and you shall receive!

It was a blast, obviously biased but I think it was a great episode!

Swapped the water pump and belt tensioner out on the LS.
Have a few more maintenance items then I'll be looking to mount the engine permanently.

Great looking rigs! Looking forward to meeting up on the trails! Where do you call home base area?

I was finally able to align calenders and Fletcher and I made it out to Mendo this year for their 30th anniversary of the camping trip to the Mendo forest.
It was good to see so many people I've met over the years in one spot...about 60 rigs and maybe more attended.
Here are some of the pictures I captured.

Scully off-road coming through with the work on a custom lt230.
1:1 high range to lower the RPM some at cruising speeds for the LS.
Also did the part time 4wd kit to take some burden off the Ujoints in the D44 axles.
Plus all the heavy duty internals!

Messed around with the aligning my cut fenders so I can see if it fits... little bit high with no engine at the moment.

How much space will this steering box location leave to the axle? From the angle of this photo, it looks like the pitman arm will double as a bump stop.
About 2-3" from bottom of the frame. So I'm going to have to swap from the 1 ton tierods to heims and bolt through the bottom on the pitman.
I'll then have a double sided passenger side.
I see what you mean about the bump stop, but given leaf springs and clearence I'll need to stop before it gets that high or the springs will be close to inverting.

Little late with last weekend updates.
But more painting going on and liking how it's coming out.
Some runs here and there so fixing that, also did a touch up when it was too cold. Learned the hard way there and had to resand.
The 60 year old alluminum isn't the smoothest so dealing with some imperfections, but it's a trail rig.
Dropped off remaining last parts for lt230 to Scully. Once that is back I'll begin the drive train final assembly.
Also bought new accessories parts that I need to install.
Found a bit of a unicorn, the pickup cab that I'll run when it's not summer.

The BW case could be installed, they came passenger drop on RRC’s so they would fit fine. They are not locking like the LT230 so most people go the other direction and swap the LT230 in place of the BW. If the vehicle has aspirations on tougher off-roading then the LT230 would probably be preferred. Although I have heard of some people liking the limited slip BW case over the LT230 with selectable lockers since it’s gives a little less transmission wind and the ability to totally lock up the axles mitigates the issues of not having a locking tcase
If you switch to the BW you will need new drive shafts as the lengths won't directly fit so becomes an added cost.
On the ratios, D1 comes with 1.2 high range and stock 3.32 low. You obviously can change both and I even have a 1:00 high range if you wanted to go that direction. Heck could probably sell you the TCase and seal kit I have with it.
It would give more mileage on flat ground but be a little more gutless on mountain climbs like up I80.
So there is a 1.4 and 1.6 option from the defenders which will allow it to have more gusto around town and kill some mileage. Those are also cross-cut gears so louder, some early D1s had the 1.4 stock.
The more interesting is the low-range gears, you can get 30% reduction which is 4.3:1, and 50% which is a 5:1. Don's D1 has the 30% and seems ideal with the automatic trans. I believe Mike Foster's D90 w/ manual has the 50% and definitely helps there.

Are those metal chucks or rubber?
If you got time id rebuild it at the same time you can upgrade it to a HD cross pin or even a atb .Rebuild kits are around 135 plus shipping from Ashcroft .If you need it done im sure Tim Scully could do it or Matt Jackson down is paso does good work.
This is my suggestions, used ones are around $300 and you really won't know what you have and it will likely leak so you'll be wanting to at the least a seal refresh.

Got back on the project today, gorgeous weather too.
Tackled the rear passenger side brakes.
Removed the drum and got the disc brakes on.
Forgot where I put the disc .
So I'll finalize that later.
Finally pulled trigger on flywheel and clutch too!

So couple days of work caught up in one post...
Removed the tub, started scraping the tub so I can get it set up for paint...
Then began grinding the frame clean. Hadley my daughter found it funny being covered in rust dust lol.
Really love KOH...had that on as I finished up some frame prep and then a coat of Rust-Oleum.
It will likely come in areas for more fab but good to get it cleaned too.

Some more work...got the passenger side rear wheel wells cut to match the drivers side.
Finished up doing some mock up on the front fenders.
Next I'll pull the rear tub off and clean it then paint it and clean the rear frame up and paint it.

Monday, MLK was eventful.
Started by finishing to cut the frame clean...
Then a run to All star sand blasting to pick up the bulkhead.
From there a space truck stopped by with a parts run from Tyler house, so we played around with steering box location.
