  1. For those that don't want to go so 'extreme', I just got Yokohama Geolandar G003 M/T's on my RR SC. 275/55R20 with L405 wheels. The L405 has a different offset than the stock wheels. I am getting some rubbing when I am in reverse and will need to investigate it some more and perhaps some minor modifications. Did not use any lift. The only downside is that the matching full size spare doesn't fit in the spare wheel well. Haven't tried fully deflating the tire, but I think it is about 1/2" too much. So I will carry the original stock spare (daily driver) and will need to figure out how to carry the 'off-road spare' - either roof rack or possibly a hitch mounted swing out.

I have put the truck into access height, and I didn't hear rubbing, but I plan to test further, as I need to use SF Parking Garages from time to time, and my garage isn't very tall.

To get the speedo corrected, I used the GAP Tool and changed the Tyre Size MSB - IPC to "29" (from 31). Actual speed is less than 1 MPH slower than shown. (might save me from a ticket?).

Also kept the TPMS. For the little bit of off-road I do compared to commuting, it is worth the piece of mind. It was also recommended that I run at 40PSI FR/RR, but I plan to do a chalk test at some point...

Here are a couple of picts:

Overall, I am happy with the outcome. Definitely more road noise from the tires, bit more than the K02's I was running on the LR4.

Feel like Lager Rover is back, and that is a good thing.

Stepping up to 275/65/18 (and doing necessary mods) is worth it if you want to get real MT tire. It is also worth mentioning that with this size, you cannot fit the spare under the car. It will need to be mounted somewhere else.

The 265/65R18 will fit under, after you remove the heat shield, deflate the spare a bunch and wedge it in there. I think my KO2 was about 10PSI and think that is the limit as to what fits under the LR3/4. The extra 1/2" diameter for the 275/75R18 might be too much.

Someone needs to mount one on their hood...

  3. few tips that have served me well

    • wear a hat
    • sleep in long underwear (polypro, wool, ABC*) and wool socks.
    • mummy bags will be warmer than rectangular bags, and use an appropriate rating. if unsure, rent a sleeping bag from REI to figure out what works best for you. Yes a 0ºF bag will keep someone warm at 0ºF but maybe not you.
    • heated water in well sealed water bottles in the sleeping bag will get you warm and the water won't freeze.
    • vent the tent slightly to let moisture out.
    • double up sleeping pads. cheap air mattresses will be colder than closed foam pads. check the R-Values.
    • let your sleeping bag get its full loft before the trip. take it out of the stuff sack and layout for a few days before the trip to allow the insulation to 'open' up.
    • candle lantern in the tent works better than expected (might be psychosomatic). DO NOT SLEEP WITH CANDLE BURNING.
    • don't use a huge tent, it will take longer to warm up and harder to keep warm. no more than 1 person over the tent's rated capacity.
    • if you only have a 3-season tent, consider getting a large tarp to completely cover the tent. the tent fly should extend to the ground. it is the space between the tent and the fly that will provide the insulation.

  4. Basically packed at this point... at least the essentials.

We will be leaving SF soon after my daughter is out of school. 4-hour drive with the family will easily turn into 5 or 6. Expecting an afterdark arrival...

    Cheers,

    Paul

    * oh yeah, these were canned in the last 24 hours. doesn't get much fresher than that!

  5. The post that everyone has been waiting for.... ok, at least some of you.

East Brother Beer Co, as your unofficial beer sponsor, will be bringing a 4-pack sampler of Bo Pils and Gold IPA in our new larger 19.2oz can size for each campsite (will have extras). I will likely have a limited number of others (Red Lager, Oatmeal Stout, Belgian Tripel and Pre Pro Lager) as well, depending on space left in the rig.

I wish I had the time and space for custom orders (on call for Jury Duty).

    Cheers,

    Paul

  6. FWIW, YouTube videos for vinyl installation make it all look very easy.

    - first attempt, dry method: tore the vinyl during installation. probably the way to go, but need to make sure that the vinyl is about certain temp. Gets brittle at cooler temps. ordered additional vinyl.

    - second attempt, wet method: more difficult to wrap the wrap around the edges. more forgiving for placement, but made a mess of trimming the vinyl to size. Since it doesn't adhere well with soapy water, the vinyl tends to lift when trimming.

    - third attempt: have someone else with experience deal with it... or more patience with the dry method.

Light is cutdown drastically in the cargo area, but from the inside, it just looks like your windows are covered in ice/snow - guessing different colors will have different affects.

Used 3M 1080 Vinyl, G120 Gloss White Aluminum is almost a perfect match for Zermatt Silver.

Anyhow, here is the result (needs a brewery logo):

  7. MORG Beer Plan is coming together. Coordinating delivery and all that good stuff.

Here are the orders I have so far:

    • yokrieger: Bo x2, Tripel x1
    • el chapomint: Bo x1
    • PaulD: Gold IPA x1 (to match the rig)
    • Elherbinator: Bo x2

I'll be sending a mix case+ along with the personal orders. The only thing I ask in return, post some "lifestyle" photos on Instagram and tag East Brother #eastbrotherbeer

Bummed that I cannot make it this weekend. Was really looking forward to this, but I will be there in spirit...

    Cheers

    Paul
