  1. CHANGE OF PLAN DUE TO SMOKE FROM MOSQUITO FIRE Myself and a couple of others are concerned about the projected heavy smoke and poor air quality in the area due to the Mosquito fire. The new plan is the head to Tamarack Lake south of Hwy 88. I understand this is also a super easy trail suitable for all vehicles. The lake is big enough for similar water sports. This is a totally dispersed campsite with no facilities. 38°36'41.6"N 119°53'57.7"W https://maps.app.goo.gl/GFn3Nm1CyncvUu486?g_st=ic

It’s about an hour out of Truckee off Hwy I-80. People can either go up Friday or Saturday to return Sunday. I am hoping to get up there early to secure a prime camping site / set of sites. We might organize a meeting point for those wanting to meet up en-route. I hope to get there earlier, possibly Thursday evening. Edit: due to work and teenager school dance commitments, I will now be leaving very early on Saturday morning and should be there around lunch time. The trail to the campsite is not difficult and more of a fire road than an off road trail. It gets a little bumpy in places and you may need to slow down a little. I have taken my L322 there many times and I wouldn’t expect any difficulty or damage for a Land Rover. No special equipment is required. Activities include kayaking, swimming, hiking and hanging out around the lake. There are possibly 4WD trails to explore but I am not the expert here. There are plenty of campsites but it can get a little busy. We are hoping the the weekend after the Labor Day long weekend will be a little quieter. Last weekend, the traffic out of the Bay Area on Friday afternoon and then returning on Sunday on the I-80 was horrendous. Choose a travel time to avoid traffic. It will take a minimum of five to six hours to get there from South Bay. How to get there: If you enter White Rock Lake into Google Maps, it may take you down a path that is not even a trail. Do not take the suggested quickest route. This happened to me and others the first time and it took at least an extra hour to get there. Here is a Google Maps pin including a couple of way points to direct you along the preferred route. I have started this route at the Safeway car park on Mission Blvd, Fremont as a possible meeting point for those wanting to travel together from the Bay Area. I’ll leave this up to you to choose where and where to meet as I hope to get there early. https://goo.gl/maps/xF6sNPT1csNa5VDZ8 Here is a link to Gaia for the route from Truckee to the lake https://www.gaiagps.com/public/9CE2Dxw2iv1dNb6WQ1t2fXaL Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. 3. Thanks to everyone for making this such a memorable trip. In particular, Mario for organising and Paul for supplying the wonderful beer. I have just uploaded many photos to the google drive. Please excuse the repetition. I found it difficult to select which sunset pictures were not worthy of inclusion.
  4. I’m planning on joining with my son. Thanks to Mario for scouting out an alternative campsite. I’ll aim to meet at Gilroy Starbucks.
  5. Corral Hollow would be my preference. I’ve been every year in summer, and sometime winter, for the last five years and was hoping to go again in July. The sunsets over the mountains never get old. Here’s some teasers for anyone who hasn’t been there. NCLR trip 2021 Look close and you will see the campsite in the distance
  6. Jason (13 yo) and I will head up from South Bay as soon as he is out of school on Friday. We should be able to clear most of the back seat in the Discovery for anyone wanting to ride along on Saturday from the campsite.
  7. I’m also considering heading up Friday night. Please keep me in the loop for any camping arrangements for Friday and Saturday. Robert 4086370426
  8. Disco Stu will be there. I’m just not sure which trail to run.I do have the RTT fitted at the moment and want to enjoy the comfort and convenience for a while yet I plan to camp overnight.
  9. I was really hoping to make this trip but will sadly have to miss it this year. It turns out it’s my son’s birthday and, since he’s missed birthday parties for two years, it’s going to be an important one. Have a great trip.
  10. Fitted the roof top tent with the help of a hand winch mounted to the upper balcony Needed to modify some tent shell clamp mounts to avoid the driving lights (two of which are now wired) Now I feel extra cool parking at work All set for Bowman Lake this weekend.
  11. Camping condition from the 2021 trip. This is where I got stuck the night before and this is where we camped. This event was also notable for being one of the very few times where 4x Maxtrax actually came to the rescue in getting me out. I’ve carried them ever since. They were also useful to avoid my ladder sinking into the snow.
  12. Dispersed camping on the snow. It hasn’t been super cold the last few trips but always pack for very cold weather. A really good mattress makes tent camping on the snow quite comfortable. Hand warmers are a very good investment. Throw a few in the sleeping bag and you will be toasty. I’ll be coming along with Jason, BTW. I’ll have the RTT like last year, but comfortably camped in a ground tent a month or so ago. We usually meet at the small car park right next to the 76 gas station. The Staples address in the trip description is just behind the neighbouring burger place and we will look out for anyone heading there.
  13. Just booked site 243 I will probably bring the D2, but I have done the trip a couple of times in the L322. One of those time we made it to the end of the Bald Mountain trail and the other time we made it about 20’ off the grade road. IMG_5125.MOV
  14. I’ll drive up from Cupertino on Saturday morning and plan to stay the night.
  15. I have a prior commitment on Friday night but could join Saturday morning, after the drive up from South Bay. Happy to consider camping on Saturday night. I was at Bowman the weekend before last. There was not a flake of snow around. It will be interesting to see the difference after a few days. I’m also happy to camp at Shaver Lake (Camp Edison) for a Bald Mountain run.
  16. I might try to go for the first hour or so. I wonder if they will have a ‘drive over the McLaren’ event?
  17. I’ll be there and plan to camp. Hoping to get my wife to tent camp.
  18. There have been no updates on the Expedition Portal site. I don’t know the owner other than through this feed.

  20. Head to the staging area at the Loon Lake Rubicon Trailhead. From there you can contact someone to come pick you up or walk for five to ten minutes to the Thursday night campsite. Follow the tyre tracks along the path shown. I plan to rock up on Friday morning. See y’all there.
  21. Thanks to Don, we spent Saturday rebuilding the front of the Classic. New timing chain and sprockets, oil pump, pressure relief, front main seal, water pump and gaskets, distributor cap and rotor and all coolant hoses. As always, most of the time was spent cleaning parts. The timing chain was a little loose but most other components were in pretty good shape. I had new parts on hand and so everything was refreshed anyway. We checked one of the main bearings and discovered a reasonable amount of wear. Looks like the sump will come off again in the next few months to replace main and big end bearings. It was great to see the oil pressure come up a second after starting. The idle quality was smoother than previously. We worked until 3am hoping to be able to drive it home, but the brake pump started playing up after the engine was sorted, and so we came home empty handed.
  22. On Sunday, I tracked down an oil leak from the rear output flange of the transfer case in the D2. I was ready to replace the shaft seal but found that the leak was actually from the felt seal under the large nylock nut. The nut itself was quite loose and took very little effort to remove. I didn’t change the shaft seal as there was zero sign of leaking there. I didn’t have a new felt seal and used a little thread sealer under the big washer and nylock nut to hopefully seal the machines surfaces. I also added a little locktite to the nut since I didn’t have a replacement. The symptom was evidence of oil spraying from the outside rear of the brake drum. The oil is sprayed tangentially to the drum and mostly ends up spraying upwards and to the passenger side. The leak was initially small but eventually led to a drip on the driveway which is the threshold for remedial action at our place. There was no oil inside the brake drum. If you have oil inside the brake drum, this will most certainly be from the shaft seal and your brake pads may need replacement. I have always had variable vibration from my driveline since moving to the large tyres. I wonder if this loose nut could be contributing. I can’t wait to test it on the freeway.
