Aw shucks my Sunday plans got canceled but not Saturday. If it were reversed I would totally join.
Bummer it would have been fun to have another rover pal!
Plans changed slightly, planning on camping Saturday night and then driving straight back up to the bay in the morning. Will help break up the trip a little .

That's an ambitious day! Call out on 146.460 when you're heading into Los Padres from the coast... if you're near where I'm camping you'll have to stop by for a cider.
Will do!

A bit last minute, but since we were unable to get out for the entire weekend Johann and I are going to do a long leisurely day trip down the coast into Big Sur then cut across to the East on as much dirt as possible and take 101 back to the Bay.
I expect it will take most of the day as we are winging the route with few way-points. Expect 6-9 hours driving.
Rough Plan:
Meet at my place for an 8AM departure
Drive South to Old Coast Road
Quick Look at McWay Falls
Head to Fort Hunter Liggett
If there is enough time left in the day head over to Williams Hill Recreation Area for some black powder target practice.
Radios will be set to 146.460 MHz
I'll be bringing a lunch.
All rovers are welcome!
Let me know if anyone is interested.

Rupert, how is the weather holding out? Unfortunately can't do a long trip this weekend, but interested to make a trip to Lassen area soon!
Did you get snow from these last storms?
-
Fordicon!
Actually just keeping a group of Rovers running through either trail alone seems like enough of a challenge to me.
I haven't followed the water flows for that time of year historically so can't say what to expect. I know even at 'low' flows that first crossing is fairly deep, having killed a fan doing it. 3' is about as low as it gets from what I can tell. But now I've got my fancy 'lectric fans so hopefully I won't be fragging any more fan blades.
3' of water! Oh man... Snowflake is going to throw a hissy rod or something. Guess I better get moving on the snorkel.

Well... these new dates may just make it possible. I am currently balancing a wedding in San Diego the weekend before and Theresa's family visiting... but priorities are important in life!!!
Spiritually I am in 100%
Reality I am in 50%
Mechanically Snowflake is in 94.24%

Well didn't happen today but a lot has in last few days.
Snowflake is back on the road with no damage other than none of the windows now work. Granted I only had 2 out 4 working before we went swimming.
- Replaced the starter with an updated one from Classic Car Performance
- Replaced every gosh darned battery cable (the new starter was clocked and the old cables were too short)
- Dumped water filled oil and refreshed with new.
- Scrubbed out intake
- Bumped the starter and pumped out any of the fluids left out
- Soaked cylinders for a few days in mystery oil
- Bumped starter again
- Checked spark and confirmed fuel presence
- Cris cleaned the MAF
- After pumping the over-exaggerated equivalent of an Olympic swimming pool's worth of caramel macchiato out the tail pipe the engine started to cough and sputter and eventually keep running.
- Replaced oil in the transmission
- Got tacos
- Replaced oil in the transfer case.

Last night put the finishing touches on the upgraded wiring for the new alternator.
Swapped out the stock 80amp alternator with a 120amp Bosch alternator found on many 90s Volkswagens. Why?
- Can't find the stock alternator on local chain part store shelves, but the Bosch one can be found
- The new alternator cost the same as stock and puts out more
- Only a connector change needed to modify the harness
- Small spacer needed, no bracket modifications
Routed a rear axle breather line into the cabin to replace the one that didn't exist...

That fair-lead choice just gives that nice touch of pizzazz without to much party.

After giving it a thought. September is long enough away to have a rover ready. Sign Theresa and I up!
I'll put the dates in at work tomorrow.

Front and rear are done. Just need to strip the rear lug nuts of those stupid caps and fix the panhard / watts link issues in the front and rear and then get aligned. After that, just need to fix all the weird sounds I’m bound to get. Should be good to go for shaver!
The cap removal saga continues... Nice progress though!

Spent most of today driving around the Bay area inspecting auto parts stores... Frankly the selection is appalling. It is more of a parts desert out here than the middle of nowhere MidWest...
After conducting said inspections I managed to use the parts I collected to finally get the OM617 fired up. Victory... Onward and rearwards, to the clutch assembly that is
And tomorrow, well let's just say I may not be working on "my" rover....

Kiddie pool drip pan? Really? That's a whole new level of Rover dripitude if you need to use that.
Now on a serious note... Well done, the engine looks awesome!

Let's just say "major" mechanical repairs aren't exactly kosher at our current rental... granted, I don't think I have attempted anything major... although, I may also not be the best judge of that.
And you should have seen the ooze dripping off that block before I painted it!
