  1. With all this snow falling in the next several days, I’m getting the itch for some snow wheeling. I’m thinking of getting in a run next weekend. It should be good quality snow with this storm being a cold one. I was thinking Bald Mountain or Bowman. I’d be open for whatever though. Who is interested?
  2. Instead of doing a typical MORG for January we are going to join in on the Cal4wheel fun and attend the Winter Fun Festival! It looks like we should be getting some decent snow coming, so we should have enough to make the run fun. This event does require registration and also requires choosing the run you want to go on when you register. Check out the info I’ve included and reply to this post if you plan on attending and your opinion on which run you would like to do. The plan will be for us to choose a run or runs that we will do as a group. Of course if you really want to do a different run than the rest of us, you’re more than welcome to do that but it would more fun if we all did the event together. If you haven’t been to a Cal4wheel event or an off-road event outside of our club stuff, this would be a cool experience and look into the larger wheeling community. Please reply with any interest or questions, it would be good to get a good dialogue going on this thread.
  3. Good times fellas. It was nice to see some folks I don’t get to always see and also meet some new friends. Bald Mountain worked out well as an Annual trail. It allows a mix of vehicles to run the same trail together but all have plenty of line options to suit your vehicle from mild to wild. We initially drove pretty much straight to the top in a pretty efficient style. On the way back, the later group got in a little more play time taking on a bunch of optional lines. It was cool to see some of the newer guys challenging themselves and really testing their vehicles and also cool to see Colin doing his usual Colin things on trail. And if an obstacle was more than you wanted, there would always be another line choice or two that would be manageable. Hopefully we can make it out there more in the summer.
  4. Also have a set of new stainless steel +4” brake lines for a discovery 2
  5. Also folks, feel free to post up any items you plan on bringing for the raffle. It’s always good for building up interest
  6. Rebuilt my front driveshaft. Lasted about 3 years, so not bad. Didn’t have any real failure, but was starting to shake some. After removing it I noticed some play in the ujoints.
  7. Broke a pin on my winch socket during the Rovicon. Finally replaced the socket and also relocated the control connection via and extension.
  8. We will be having a raffle at this years Annual, but it will be a little different than what most will be used to. The club has procured several raffle items from sponsors and even purchased a “big ticket” item for the raffle, but the bulk of the raffle will be a swap meet raffle. What that means is that you will still be able to purchase tickets and participate in the raffle per normal, but we will also be allowing, encouraging, counting on members to bring in items to get raffled off in exchange for tickets. Pretty good deal right? So here is how it’ll work. Scavenge your garage and find any good condition, new or used but useable Rover related items. Bring them to the raffle and exchange them for tickets. The value will be assessed by whoever is handing out the tickets, likely myself or someone else on the board. Generally most used items go for about half the original price, condition dependent of course. New items can go for their new item price. Bringing any price reference documentation will be helpful, like an online screenshot of it for sale somewhere. Otherwise I’m sure we can figure out a fair price ourselves. We will then add the items to the raffle for someone else to win. This will be a great way to clear out some useful parts that are collecting dust and taking up space while helping out fellow members who could put those parts to good use. It could be camping supplies, rover parts, rover memorabilia, or even services like a weekend trailer rental/borrow. Any large items like engines or such don’t need to be brought to the raffle. If you can bring some pictures or something along with some info to corroborate a value then that should be sufficient. We do want good stuff tho, we don’t want this to be filled with junk nobody will want. So if you have a borderline item, or something very specialized like an engine, please contact me before and maybe we can figure out if it will be appropriate and also predetermine a value for it. This is a new concept for us. We have high hopes for it, but there may be areas that need fine tuning for the future. The success will be largely dependent on the quality of items we get. So please feel free to reach out to me if you have items that you aren’t sure about. I think this should be a lot of fun. Best way to contact me is through the phone via call or text. DM through the forum is ok too, but response time won’t be as quick. Eric 408-772-8534
  9. Keep in mind that this is a member o my event. So your neighbor will have to be a current member to attend.
  10. I’ll be there. It’ll be either myself and a dog, or Myself and Merlyn with 2 dogs. Should be fun! It’ll give the club a chance to play on some of the fun obstacles on Bald we normally don’t get the chance to when there’s snow.
  11. Spotted in Los Gatos today. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. IMPORTANT INFO: There is a wildfire that will be affecting our event this weekend. The Caldor Fire is currently causing evacuations in the Polluck Pines area and will likely be closing Highway 50 to traffic. Things are fluid and our plans will have to match. We have a few backup plans, but we are hopeful that we will be able to have the trail run that we originally planned for. We will update the plans and on this thread as things develop. For now I am going to lay out our plans A - C. Plan A: Meet and camp per normal at the start of the trail by the Loon Lake staging area. This is the original plan except that we do expect highway 50 to be closed. So you will want to get here via Georgetown and Wentworth Springs Rd. Plan B: This plan will be enacted if Loon Lake gets closed. We will still be entering from the west side of the trail, but we will be entering through the Wentworth Springs Trail. This would be enter the Rubicon Trail at waypoint 05 on the map picture. We would be meeting and camping at Wentworth Springs CG which is along the trail. Plan C: This plan will be enacted if they close El Dorado Forest. We will enter the trail from the Tahoe Side. There are a few lakes near the Tahoe side staging area to camp. We would be basically running it backwards and then turning around and exiting again through the Tahoe side. We will be updating this post when we get updated news. The final “Plan” we end up using will be updated with more detailed instruction. Please DM myself or Don or Greg with any questions or comments. Please refrain from unnecessary commentary on this thread for now in order to keep the pertinent info easier to find. This situation sucks, but we are on top of it and will do our best to make the event another successful one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I usually will fill up at the Fresh Pond Chevron and I won’t need extra fuel under normal circumstances, but I also usually will bring a few gallons just in case. Doesn’t take much to create a situation that requires extra gas. I have a 4 gallon rotopax that fits in the roof. I’ll probably fill that and then unload it into the car Friday night to transfer weight down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. I’m going to bring: Ashcroft HD axle shafts Hub Steering arms Hoses CPS Tension pulley Fuel pump Coolant reservoir Coil Pack Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Hey D2 guys, let’s list the spare parts you have and can bring to the Rovicon. This was we can get a comprehensive amount of spares and leave some of the redundant parts at home. So list what you got. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. I don’t know. The machining is pretty clean. Plus the new 300M shaft fits fine into the hub splines. Both Cv’s get stuck at pretty much the exact same point into the splines. I’ll see what they have to say but I’d be pretty surprised if I could make these work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. We will be running the trail Friday. Groups will be heading out Friday morning through around noon. A basic itinerary will be coming out soon, but I would plan on camping Thursday if you can swing it. Otherwise I’d plan on getting to the trailhead early on Friday Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Took apart my front axle to replace my cv’s and to remove the differential and reapply rtv. Found a cracked boot on one of my guide pins for the brakes. Found it just in time too as it wasn’t hard to get out but would have been in the near future. Some of you may remember earlier this year I had a completely seized guide pin that required me to replace the caliper carrier. So buy a set of guide pins and boots, they’re cheap, and keep them on hand for when you need them. The diff looked good when I took it out. Happy to get that resealed Cv job started off smooth. Got the dust shield thing onto the new shafts easily. Slipped it into the diff easily. The hub would not go one though. The splines on the new Ashcroft 300M cv’s don’t fit in the hub. My old cv’s are also Ashcroft and they slide in easily. The differential side of the shafts fit into the hub splines easily. So I don’t know why the cv’s don’t. I emailed Ashcroft and will call them at like midnight or whatever and try to get this figured out as I would like to have a functioning front axle for the Rovicon. Any feedback on this issue is appreciated. Here are some pics of the two cv’s Old cv[emoji3595] New cv[emoji3595] Old cv[emoji3595] New cv[emoji3595] at this point I can pick up the hub by lifting the cv. It’s jammed in the splines Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Doesn’t work like that. “Tickets” aren’t transferable Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Consider the LS swap route. They have kits available that allows you to use your stock electronics making it a very smooth swap. Plus it should be able to be smogged assuming you can get past the visual. There are several companies out there. I am somewhat familiar with Trailhead 4x4’s kit. Definitely worth looking into. Benefits would be more power, better mpg’s, and much more reliable. Basically a huge upgrade Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Replaced my steering box today. Nothing too exciting about that, but I did take apart the old to examine the failure. The worm gear had been chewed up pretty good and had a decent sized area that had no remaining gear. Makes sense with my symptoms I was experiencing. I also noticed the bearing on the sector shaft area that engages with the worm gear was seized. The metal chunks from the worm gear could have ruined the bearing, or the seized bearing and roller could have caused a worm gear failure. Chicken or the egg I guess. I don’t have enough experience with this issue to know which one it was, but here are some pics of the damage Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
