  1. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa that's how you get the cool new coozie. The invitation only club coozie.
  2. Iv seen hudd130 mention it a couple times and it got me thinking if I'm doing it right or wrong. I'm definitely not bear grills and all my cold weather camping theories are based off of person experience not science. So I figured I mention what I do and see what others think and do and see how I can prevent making my family the next Donner party. So when I ground camp in the snow I like to have a couple of tarps and a decent tent with a water proof bottom. I put the tarp down then the tent and try desperately to keep the snow out of the tent so it doest create water in the tent, which with 2 dogs and a 3 year old its pretty difficult. Then I put down a pad, iv learned that having a bit of insulation between you and the ground when it has snow on it is a must. Now the fun bit, for cold camping I try to use my bed roll. I'm not sure if bed roll is a technical definition or slang but in the hunting world it's how you define your sleeping bag set up and mostly they consist of a heavy canvas outer sleeve a good canvas sleeping bag, mines rated at -35, and then mine also has a wool liner. With that set up it can be cold as a woman's heart and I'll still be toasty warm. And my secret weapon for sleeping in cold weather is a 40 pound short hair pointer. Lola is her name and she can not get warm to save her life so as a result she burrows down to the bottom of my sleeping bag and never comes up for air. She then becomes my person foot warmer through the night. That's most of my ground tent ideas but I'd love to hear others and mabey get into some other cold weather camping ideas and gadgets. Thanks
  3. These are awesome I can't give enough praise to Eric and all those involved, iv got an hour and a half commute for work each day and and whenever there's a new one I get excited for the drive.
  4. Well even without camping we were planning to head to scullys to drop off an axle. But we hit the edge of reno at 10 and spent 1 hour making it about 5 miles and according to Google we were still 3.5 hours from sac so we gave up. Have fun on the beach and take pictures for us to live vicariously through you.
  5. I wish we had a cool excuse but it sounds like as of now we might be snowed in on this of the hill and as much as I love all of you rover nuts I don't want to be stuck on that side of the hill on Sunday with the snow storm that's on its way. I'm pretty bummed that it didn't work out because it's in my bucket list to beach camp so hopefully we can recreate this trip again. Thankyou to Lutz for all the planning to set this up.
  6. It should be ok on the sand its a small lightweight trailer and we can use it to string a tarp if needed. I was gonna trailer the 88 with the truck but with the snow on the pass on Sunday I'd rather not be dragging that set up in the snow so it'll be handbag lr3 for me. Everybody bring your straps for when I get it sunk in the ocean.
  7. We're gonna head out tomorrow morning with a pit stop in sac. So hopefully we'll be there around 5, a bit of noob question do we need a little sand flag for the car? And do we plan to set up a bit of a base camp on Saturday? I have to drag my little jeep trailer down to drop off parts but I'd rather not drag it around the beach if possible.
  8. we just put in for our reservation so i hope i did it right. that being said we may be trailering down Friday and stopping at scullys to drop off on axle if he's around that day, so is there a place to store a truck and trailer near by or would someone mind letting me leave it in a driveway for the weekend?
  9. It was a fun trip and i have to thank all the guys for putting the trip together, and for letting me join in. I was definitely the anchor on the trip as i was the only one who ended up needing a strap twice and to hook up the winch. Julia has been begging to go run this trail for a few years now and I'm glad her first was with a great group and in the snow at that. Sorry for the poor quality pictures but every water crossing would fill the little 88 with steam and the camera lense kept getting fogged over or covered in rain drops. Thers a ton of stories that will probably best be told in person around the camo fire or i suppose on Erics NCLR podcast. I cant wait for the next one and here's a couple of pictures, more in the photo bucket.
  10. Well it was a success, we had 3 tags in total in our group and filled 2 of them. It was probably one of if not the toughest hunts iv done with 9 days total spent in the desert. We spotted over 100 doe and only 3 bucks and only 2 of them were worth taking. But to the fun part for this forum, the little range rover put in the work with about 1000 miles of dirt travel and no issues to speak of. We pinstriped the living hell out of it and got to run full heater in the cold mornings and full a/c in the afternoon. But for a 30 year old British truck beating around the desert I expected atleast some hiccup but none. It is exceptionally beautiful country out here and someday if people are interested I'd love to lead a few of us around to the hot springs and mines, but for now hopefully on the next camp out we will have some mule deer snacks.
  11. Just finished up the last two with timm cooper and honestly you should just call that retirement because I'm not sure how you top that. My hats off to Eric and Goose and all those involved in the podcast it is top notch and just the right amount of technical talk, bench wheeling, and banter, well done.
  12. I drew a little land rover on the doller I pinned up. It's a cool little piece of nevada history. It was originally built in the 1800 for a horse swap place for the pony express then later purchased when highway 50 went through and turned into a bar. I was told the money tradition started because there was no banks in the area, you would write your name on some cash and pin it up then when you came through you would have cash there. It's still has the only "true" old school fuel pump iv used where you pump the gas then go in and say how much you filled up then they dig out the calculator and figure the amount you owe. Now for the miles related part they just recently put in a tesla charging point there, but it's ran partially off the diesel generator so a bit ironic but still cool to see the history.
  13. It was so I suspected it was when you guys ran through on the way to moab. Even though you know how it got there it's still fun to see.
  14. I was lucky enough to draw a deer tag this year and in tradition we took the lr3 out scouting over the weekend. We did about 250 miles off road explored some abandoned ranches and mines. Soaked in a hot spring, found probably the nicest middle of no where camp site iv seen, and happily found some deer. To my delight the high milage worn out lr3 did great and I must admit I'm softening up a bit because I'd almost prefer it over the old series truck. And while having a few beers at middle gate station we found some evidence of others coming through stapled to the wall.
  15. I'm still a bit of a greenhorn to nclr experiences so alot of my flash backs are pre nclr, hope everyone doesn't mind to much. But this is the climb out of Fordyce back in 2011ish and the resulting sweet tea track bar bushing to drive home.
  16. Well poop I just got the winch on my range rover done and was planning on sneaking up Saturday afternoon and finding some place to get stuck and try it out. Oh well mabey on the next one.
  17. Here's a fun history photo if your board. From left to right a 1967 early 2a, a 1969 "bug eye", and a 1969 late 2a. Pretty much the moment rover went to lights on the fenders thanks to the USA. I figure this will probably be my only moment I'll have all 3 in my driveway so dance while the suns out I suppose.
  18. In preparation for rovicon and the never ending desire for more storage in an 88 I started looking at the Exmoor trim door storage cards. But finding they will cost me my first born and block my tootsie vents I went looking for a work around, and found some 20 doller Kelty seat storage thingys. Some drilling later and they more or less fit the bill.
  19. I hope this isn't against the rules but this is from my pre nclr days. Sometime in 2007 I think, I was 16 and this was my first solo camping trip. I didn't stray too far from home but I did manage to blow up the rear diff and had to drive home in front wheel drive.
  20. I ment to post this last night but got wound up in finding the best prime deal and failed to hit post. But a few coins put in the way back machine gets us here, this was one of the first camping trips Julia and I took together. I drove through the puddle and thought that would be a cool picture and made her get out in the mud as I drove through again.
  21. Soooooooooo are we building a rovicon taco truck out of it, or mobile bar.
  22. My dad wanted to be an old man and go to the car show so I carted his 88 down and he took his ambulance. In the end the ambulance took best in show in the 4x4 division, granted it was us 2 old jeeps and a d90 in the running so a hollow victory but a trophy none the less.
