Budeck reacted to Jesse Coombs in 2024 Pacific Northwest Rover Rally in Redmond/Bend Oregon May 24-27th
    Hi All,
I just wanted to let you know about the upcoming National Land Rover Rally being organized by Pacific Coast Rover Club and ANARC event, May 24-27 in Redmond Oregon.  I am on the Board for the PCRC, and we are putting a bunch of effort into planning the best event we can.
In my humble opinion, this National Land Rover Rally in Oregon may end up being better than the average Rover (or Jeep or any model) national gathering. Here is why I say that.
Like all events, we will have camping, daily runs, vendor booths, and it is in a very scenic setting.  But the Bend/Redmond area is especially beautiful and scenic.   Either Saturday or Sunday I am leading an all-day extra hard run.  Maybe you guys could help me decide how difficult or not to make the run.
There should be free classes on topics such as driving, recovery, trail first aid, radio communications, and trail preparedness.  The plan is to have live music and comfortable places to hang out and spend time together.
There will be daily runs that offer a variety from non-damaging scenic runs to more challenging runs.  I think one of the runs may go into the Cascade mountain area.  I am bringing at least 1 Series I and I am hoping to either let people drive for a test spin or have them drive with me.  I haven’t decided yet.
When I went to the National Moab rally we basically did runs, spent time in our small groups, and went to the one dinner with the raffle.  Our club’s goal for the May event is to have an engaging weekend that provides people with fun things to do the entire time they are there.  The plan is to have big free dinner Saturday also.
Anyway, I encourage everyone to do whatever’s best for them, I just wanted you all to know the plan.
I hope to see as many of you at the event as possible. We need to show the National Rover crowd how us West Coasters actually get down.
If you have any questions feel free to email me at jesselcoombs@gmail.com or call me at 541-231-7012

Please help us spread the word.  The S.F. Bay Land Rover Club is a NEW monthly Land Rover gathering.  Rain or shine we have free “cars and coffee” type meetup the second Saturday of the month from 8-10am at the south end of the Larkspur Ferry Terminal Car Park near the ‘B’ aisle.   We're nonexclusive, free, and 100% noncompetitive with the NCLR or any Land Rover club or group or meet.

Saturday March 9, 2024, is our inaugural meet!

Who am I?  I've owned Series Land Rovers for over 35 years and got my first one "LittleCar" a 1967 SIIA in about 1986 when I was 13 years old.  In the 1990's I had a Land Rover website www.oldrover.com that detailed our antics with 13 mostly non running Land Rovers that I had with my dad.  We peaked in 1999 with the import of at 1975 101FC Vampire.  I now publish my automotive follies on Instagram under @dubiousgarage and am down to 6 Land Rovers.  I thought it would be fun to create a low key, Bay Area local, cars and coffee meet up that dubiously running and not trail ready Land Rovers could attend, hence the S.F. Bay Land Rover Club.

    Howdy All
Lets get some Rover bashing on the docket. This is a very awesome trail with lots of little rivers to play around in and lakes nearby.
    Vehicle Requirements:
Electrically and mechanically sorted (HAH) solid axle vehicle with 33in tires, sliders, and traction aides. There is a high likelihood of body damage... Not that I would care of such things! We can get IFS vehicles to the main camp if people would like to join and ride along. I believe its possible to get most vehicles though this trail in stock form but it would require lots of winching and high chances for major failures (CV's, UCA/LCA's, etc).
We can make a second group for Corral hollow or Sour grass if we have other who would like to join who dont meet the above requirements.
Plan is to meet at the Utica side slick rock trail camp Friday June 10th.
Trail run will be Saturday morning 9:00 am from camp to alpine lake restaurant where we will grab lunch assuming all goes well. We will then decide on either heading back down the trail or taking the road back to camp.
I will be heading up Thursday night to secure camp sites and troll around so feel free to join early If you would like!!!

Figured out why the 110 lost oil pressure on the way down. The end of the cam broke off! Per Turner Engineering it happens occasionally on 200Tdi’s. Easy fix - just pull entire engine, take it halfway apart, paint the block, have the flywheel machined since I forgot that when replacing the clutch, put in a new windshield and frame, have the roof and sides painted...

I was looking at my old routes from that Gold Point trip.  I wasn't planning to visit GP again, but a lot of that looks usable.  Just not sure if I want to cover the same ground or try to find new routes.

One of the challenges will be to connect GP with Eureka Dunes via a fun route. I see some abandoned mines in the general area, as well as some interesting geological features.,, Like this thing:

Having just come back from Mojave Rd, Michele has informed me we are going to Death Valley in April.

I've only been once but the routes are pretty well defined.  There's a TON of area to cover and sights to see so I haven't begun to plan a route yet but am open to suggestions on that front.

Tentatively looking at the week of 4/12 as I know at least some kids have spring break that week but I also know various schools do this at different times.

Set for Week of March 29th, with Sat 3/27 and Sat 4/3 as travel days

This would be a more 'overland' trip vs more technical.  I'll be taking the LR3.  It will be more difficult than Mojave Rd as that's mostly just sand/gravel roads and is pretty much all flat but it should be well within the capabilities of any lightly mod'ed Rover.   No rock crawling but do plan on good AT or MT tires (sharp rocks are a strong possibility as are lots of washboard).  Diff guards are always a good precaution as well.  You won't need lockers or other big upgrades but those things never hurt.

DV is huge with large elevation changes.  Weather could be anything from snow to 80* - possibly in the same day.  I would expect to bring extra fuel in addition to your regular spares and parts but again, have not set a route yet.

If this is something you're interested in post up and I'll start working on a plan!

Well.... we would normally be doing a weekend snow-run to Shaver Lake and Bald Mountain over President's day weekend but Camp Edison is closed due to the 'rona.  We are looking into alternate locations this week.

And I'm planning a week long DV trip for April as well.

Both will have separate threads for discussion shortly.

Great summary Don and I really appreciated your help with keeping me going and being patient. I probably should have returned home at the first sign of trouble but we prevailed. Thanks to all those in Group 1 who put up with my cranky D3!!
My only question is when are we planning the next trip? Colorado in August??

Looks like most everybody is back.  Much thanks to Lutz for organizing this - we had a big turn out.  I never got a final count but something around 15 rigs I believe.  Oddly no RRC, D1, or D2 on this trip, though we did have D90, D110, LR3, LR4, Disco6 (aka new Defender), P38, RRS, and L322 RR.

A few of us had to bail out Sunday to get home for work on Monday including myself.  Gabe and I made the run together and I arrived just after midnight.  He should have have gotten home about an hour later.

Very few notable issues among the group.  The biggest (and I do mean that) was Colin's LMTV.  Though he had put several thousand road miles on the tires once he aired down and started on the trail he lost one only a few miles in.  He got that changed but not long after lost another.  He then got to enjoy the fun of trying to find a 47" military tire in the middle nowhere.  Luckily he was able to make it happen and made it home though he wasn't foolish enough to try the rest of the trail given the on-going track record.

One other flat to report when Ted's new Disco6 lost a tire right around dark on the first day.  He had stayed with Colin to help sort things out and ended up on his own coming to camp.  Luckily his tire is a bit easier to change than Colin's.

The only other significant issue I'm aware of was Gabe's rear airbags.  A short distance into the first day he had his left rear start going down.  He was able to get it back up but it continued to go down any time he flexed it.  He had known there was a slow leak and rebuilt the rear valve block just before leaving thinking it was that but turns out the bag also had a problem.  I should mention they were Arnott struts and under warranty, but as we know a warranty doesn't really help much on the trail.  He elected to detour to LRLV who was able to get him in and out that afternoon and he came back to meet us at camp that night only to have the other rear bag start leaking.  He was able to complete the trail anyway, though he had to take it easy and stop occasionally to air back up.  Of course on the road it was not problem.

I on the other hand was fine on the drive down and on the trail, but on the highway headed home I started throwing cross articulation errors once I got up to highway speeds and the truck would panic and try to go to the bumpstops.  So I used the GAP tool to lock it into build mode and drove home just fine.  I swear the LR3 computers are hyper paranoid and too smart for their own good.

I've uploaded my pics to the google folder.  Hopefully more of the others do as well.  It was good for a change to just do a relaxing drive instead of looking for challenges and seeing the new D6s in the wild got me thinking more about them.  I know better - I'd be better served waiting a couple years until they start hitting the used market but it does look like a good replacement for my LR3 when the time comes.

Okay Guys & Gals... The Rogue tag-alongs are out...Whew! Makes logistics a LOT easier. Meanwhile, the weather might be getting more "interesting." We had snow on the Lanfair plain last year at this time, and we might have some on this run. Will have to track the Soda Lake precipitation situation as well.

I am running out to pre-run the 1st 80 miles early next week and will report in to master leader Lutzi by cell phone.

    Stay tuned!

Due to an abundance of enthusiasm, there might be a couple (2) additional "rogue" participants tagging along on this trip. i am making arrangements for them to follow their own path, leaving AFTER Nick's 0900 Group. They are all Land-Rover owners from out of NCLR territory.
