CHANGE OF PLAN DUE TO SMOKE FROM MOSQUITO FIRE
Myself and a couple of others are concerned about the projected heavy smoke and poor air quality in the area due to the Mosquito fire.
The new plan is the head to Tamarack Lake south of Hwy 88. I understand this is also a super easy trail suitable for all vehicles. The lake is big enough for similar water sports. This is a totally dispersed campsite with no facilities.

Thanks for original post Eric
Yes, the September MORG will take us to beautiful White Rock Lake. It’s about an hour out of Truckee off Hwy I-80. People can either go up Friday or Saturday to return Sunday.
I am hoping to get up there early to secure a prime camping site / set of sites. We might organize a meeting point for those wanting to meet up en-route. I hope to get there earlier, possibly Thursday evening.
Edit: due to work and teenager school dance commitments, I will now be leaving very early on Saturday morning and should be there around lunch time.
The trail to the campsite is not difficult and more of a fire road than an off road trail. It gets a little bumpy in places and you may need to slow down a little. I have taken my L322 there many times and I wouldn’t expect any difficulty or damage for a Land Rover. No special equipment is required.
Activities include kayaking, swimming, hiking and hanging out around the lake. There are possibly 4WD trails to explore but I am not the expert here.
There are plenty of campsites but it can get a little busy. We are hoping the the weekend after the Labor Day long weekend will be a little quieter. Last weekend, the traffic out of the Bay Area on Friday afternoon and then returning on Sunday on the I-80 was horrendous. Choose a travel time to avoid traffic. It will take a minimum of five to six hours to get there from South Bay.
How to get there:
If you enter White Rock Lake into Google Maps, it may take you down a path that is not even a trail. Do not take the suggested quickest route. This happened to me and others the first time and it took at least an extra hour to get there.
Here is a Google Maps pin including a couple of way points to direct you along the preferred route. I have started this route at the Safeway car park on Mission Blvd, Fremont as a possible meeting point for those wanting to travel together from the Bay Area. I’ll leave this up to you to choose where and where to meet as I hope to get there early.

Thanks to everyone for making this such a memorable trip. In particular, Mario for organising and Paul for supplying the wonderful beer.
I have just uploaded many photos to the google drive. Please excuse the repetition. I found it difficult to select which sunset pictures were not worthy of inclusion.- Mr.BlueSky, El Chapomint, PaulD and 1 other

I vote for Hodor. Looks rather frumpy

Corral Hollow would be my preference. I’ve been every year in summer, and sometime winter, for the last five years and was hoping to go again in July. The sunsets over the mountains never get old.
Here’s some teasers for anyone who hasn’t been there.

Jason (13 yo) and I will head up from South Bay as soon as he is out of school on Friday. We should be able to clear most of the back seat in the Discovery for anyone wanting to ride along on Saturday from the campsite.

I’m signed up to go and will be bringing my wife, son and doggo.

Disco Stu will be there. I’m just not sure which trail to run.I do have the RTT fitted at the moment and want to enjoy the comfort and convenience for a while yet
I plan to camp overnight.

I was really hoping to make this trip but will sadly have to miss it this year. It turns out it’s my son’s birthday and, since he’s missed birthday parties for two years, it’s going to be an important one.
Have a great trip. -
Fitted the roof top tent with the help of a hand winch mounted to the upper balcony
Needed to modify some tent shell clamp mounts to avoid the driving lights (two of which are now wired)
Now I feel extra cool parking at work
All set for Bowman Lake this weekend.- Mr.BlueSky, Elherbinator, PaulD and 1 other

Camping condition from the 2021 trip. This is where I got stuck the night before and this is where we camped.
This event was also notable for being one of the very few times where 4x Maxtrax actually came to the rescue in getting me out. I’ve carried them ever since. They were also useful to avoid my ladder sinking into the snow. -
What is the camping situation going to be?
Dispersed camping on the snow. It hasn’t been super cold the last few trips but always pack for very cold weather. A really good mattress makes tent camping on the snow quite comfortable. Hand warmers are a very good investment. Throw a few in the sleeping bag and you will be toasty.
I’ll be coming along with Jason, BTW. I’ll have the RTT like last year, but comfortably camped in a ground tent a month or so ago.
We usually meet at the small car park right next to the 76 gas station. The Staples address in the trip description is just behind the neighbouring burger place and we will look out for anyone heading there. -

I’ll drive up from Cupertino on Saturday morning and plan to stay the night.
-
I have a prior commitment on Friday night but could join Saturday morning, after the drive up from South Bay. Happy to consider camping on Saturday night.
I was at Bowman the weekend before last. There was not a flake of snow around. It will be interesting to see the difference after a few days.
I’m also happy to camp at Shaver Lake (Camp Edison) for a Bald Mountain run.

I might try to go for the first hour or so. I wonder if they will have a ‘drive over the McLaren’ event?

Hey folks,
I am going to be building up my Disco II with the ability to make it through the Rubicon Trial. With that said, I am on the hunt for the following items, preferably used/as "budget" as possible... If you have any of these you are willing to part with, please let me know!
- Rock Sliders
- Front/Rear locker (Detroit/Truetrac... probably not air)
- Rear bumper
- Other armor i.e. diff guards, fuel tank, steering...
- 16" steel wheels
Thanks for helping out!
~Stephen
I would add:
Solid engine mounts
Upgraded / protected tie rod and drag link
Upgraded driveshafts
Upgraded axles (you will break stock units)
I have a set of sliders that you might be interested in. Let me know if you want to take a look. The parts are in Cupertino.

I’ll be there and plan to camp. Hoping to get my wife to tent camp.

Head to the staging area at the Loon Lake Rubicon Trailhead.
From there you can contact someone to come pick you up or walk for five to ten minutes to the Thursday night campsite.
Follow the tyre tracks along the path shown.
I plan to rock up on Friday morning. See y’all there.

Further update. We have heard that Tamarack Lake is low right now. The plan is to head there first with nearby Lost Lake East as the backup.
Backup camp spot
Apologies for all the changes in plan. I did scout the original White Rock Lake site just last weekend but the Mosquito fire has flared up since then.
