October 2024 black rock NV morg

Recommended Posts

Getting this out early as there is probably travel time needed for anyone wanting to come from the bay area.

WHAT: a desert camping trip through high rock canyon in northern Nevada.

WHERE: this is where it gets fun, we will meet in gerlach Nv at noon on friday. If people want to convoy from reno to gerlach we can arrange a meet up spot and if anyone wants to come in Thursday and spend the night at our place we can make room for anyone.

WHEN: friday October 4 - sunday october 6

THE PLAN: This is a definite overland style trip we will travel from one camp to the next through high rock canyon. Any stock rover with good tires can make this trip but there is for certain pinstripe opportunity. We will meet up in gerlach friday around noon fuel and head out. There is no grocery store in gerlach so get any last minute foods ahead of time. From there we will head north to soldier meadow hot springs for first camp. There is a pool to soak in so bring your swim trunks if you want. We will then head out through fly canyon then into high rock canyon. This was one of the emigrant routs so plenty of history and sights. We will end our run saturday at either Steven's camp or massacre ranch where we can do a potluck dinner if people want. Then sunday it's a run back to pavement with a possible stop for petrified wood if people want. I'll set out more details and info as it gets close but gerlach is 2 hours north of reno so I just want people to be set up if needed. Any questions feel free to reach out.

So far going we have a decent crew going if anyone else plans on going let me know and if your interested in staying Thursday night at our place or running in a convoy from reno out to gerlach.

1. Me in my 88 or range rover

2. Miles and family in range rover

3. Wood in d2

4. Mike in some rover we all will be jealous of

5. Sasha in lr3

6. Tony in d1

7. Marvin in 109 (Tyler's dad)

Update on the trip, we will meet in gerlach at  noon friday and head out by 1230. From there if the playa is passable we can run across it and look at some hot springs and black rock point. Then well head out twords soldier meadow hot springs for camp, there is a vault toilet about .5 miles from camp if needed. We can soak in the springs and swap stories at the camp fire. Then in the morning well make our way through high rock canyon and on to Steven's camp for the night. We can do a potluck dinner if everyone wants, theres a nice vault toilet there. Sunday morning well head out for gerlach and stop at a place to get petrified wood and a old lead mine if people want. If everything goes smooth we should be back to gerlach by mid day. If your afraid of dust or pinstripes this is not a run for you, good tires are a must but any stock rover can make it. We just took our stock lr3 through on a prerun with no drama. If anyone wants to come up Thursday and stay at our place your welcome to and if anyone wants to convey from fernley let me know and we can set up a meeting point. Let me know who wants to go so I can build a list and hope to see you out there.

No bad plants, there is rattle snakes but few and far between and this late they will be staying away. Our short hair did get a rash from the alkali when he was digging and sniffing with his nose but it cleared in a day . The only big worry for dogs is when we go to double hot spring. I'd advise to just leave them in the car for that quick stop the water out of the spring is between 180 and 190 degrees so a fall in is basically a lobster cook.

Looks like a good turn out of people for wood and Tony if you guys would like to convoy from fernley to gerlach we can meet at the loves in fernley at 1030 friday or you guys are welcome to come to the house and meet up in the morning, or thursday night and stay the night. We dont have a sprawling grass field like miles but we have plenty of room. As for the trip day temps will hit 80 and night will get in the 40s so prepare for the temp swing. There is fuel in gerlach but no other stores. The last grocery store is in fernley so last minute stuff should be grabbed there. Pack plenty of water and bring a shade hate as camp 1 has no trees I'll bring an ez up we can use if needed. And total milage will be roughly 120 miles ish so if you can pack a fuel can it's not a bad Idea. I'm going to have my jeep trailer with fire wood and 10 gallons of fuel if anyone does end up needing it. Itll be a fun trip with alot of cool sights and history. Looking forward to it and hanging out with my rover buddies.

Tyler, I appreciate you offering your place up for the night. Still figuring out plans and will let you know.

Do you know roughly how many miles/hours we'll be driving after Gerlach? I would do a straight shot on Friday but it's a 6+ hr drive to Gerlach for me.

After gerlach on friday will be probably 5 hours of driving with stops along the way for breaks we will probably have lunch on the plya or at black rock hot spring so there will be a good break there. Hours to camp really just depends on how much sight seeing we do and the pace we can do on the road.
