Mojave Road 2021

Recommended Posts

FYI -- the 8 AM departure from Avi Casino will greatly enforce COVID rules.. as in... an effort to reduce close human interaction, coughing on each other, high-fives, etc. Hate to do this, but I am in charge of caring for my 90 year-old mum who has had a serious bought with Valley Fever, and has therefore left her with some big "pre-existing conditions" which would probably render her dead if she became infected. So please consider this aspect, I promise a rousing good time otherwise..!

Cheers.

Starting times...

Should probably all agree to use NV time to meet in the morning. If I remember correctly from last year some phones were flipping an hour back and forth since Laughlin is right on the border and AZ doesn’t use daylight saving time.

Everyone must bring at least 2 bundles of firewood. It will be cold and there is no wood collecting on the Preserve.

On Trail Communications

Ham Radio will be primary form of communication, simplex frequency TBD but mostly likely will be 146.460

Gasoline

We are planing on traveling around 200 miles between gas stations, so bring extra gasoline if you feel like it is necessary. We are bringing an extra five gallons just in case.

Traveler's Monument

It is tradition to bring a rock from home to put on the Traveler's Monument

I'm building a plan to make this, and bringing kids so plan to go with Nick so we can get the kids together.

No sweat. Last year with AZLRO we had a brand new Disco Sport with the diesel motor. Apparently the owner lives in Canada part time and bought it there. He and his wife did the WHOLE 120 miles no problem. Stock truck. There are only a few bits on the 1st day that require a careful line, but clearance is not really an issue. My ETC never engaged in my RRC on the 2017 trip, and open diffs are fine for this trail. There are occasions, of course, where you can cross-axle in a rut on purpose to "pose" with a wheel in the air for happy-snaps if you want.

Also on the 2017 combo NCLR/AZLRO trip, we had Lithium's (at the time) fiance Marie run with us from Kelso Depot to the end in her LR2.. Lutzi towed her across the Mojave River crossing at Afton Canyon --)

I was wondering about the difficulty on this one, but the last couple comments sold me. I'm in for the 8am in the LR3, assuming my PTO gets approved by next week. But I do have a question regarding #2's. Dig a hole, I would imagine?

EDIT: PTO Confirmed! See y'all next month at 8am.

I was out near Afton in my Disco Sport around Thanksgiving. The Mojave river crossing was covered with rocks. It was only 4-6 inches deep. I did suffer light trail damage out near Spooky canyon, dented the resonator and bent a heat shield but other than that my DIsco did fine. I have 6mm aluminum skid plates on order but they are back ordered and come from France, so it will be awhile. Plus ordered the Eibach lift kit too. Probably won't have those for this trip but since i was in Death Valley and Mojave for the Thanksgiving and did fine, I am not worried. I just have to get congressional approval from my other half as this covid thing has her spooked more than a steep climb with a narrow ledge at 6K feet.
