Family duty has called, I'll be hanging out at home this weekend assisting my wife with some transnational medical care for my mother in law.  All while wishing I was stuck in the snow with you all and tiptoeing the RRS off-road.  Next time!

Just bought my Baofeng and going through the course to get my HAM radio license.  Maybe I'll see how far I can get on that this weekend.

Looking forward to seeing the photos and videos.  Have fun!

Sorry to hear - next time indeed!

  2. For those looking to convoy out to Shaver from the South Bay Saturday Morning, let's plan on meeting here at 7:30am with a planned 8am departure.

5801 Silver Creek Valley Rd, San Jose, CA 95138

@LR4HD I'll keep an eye out for you. My cell number is 402.741.0231.

If anyone else wants to join let me know and we can keep an eye out!

Convoy details added to first post.

  3. Well it is Wednesday and about time to start planning any convoys headed up to Shaver.

Who all is leaving from the Bay Area early Saturday morning? If there is enough interest, I'll setup a rally point.

Ideally, depart time around 7:30-8AM from the South Bay is what I'd be shooting for. That should place us at Shaver Lake around noon if not a little earlier.

Depending on how the convoy shakes out we can rally in San Jose or Gilroy.

    Hello Land Rover People!

We are thrilled to announce that the club will be hosting the Third Annual Overland Event in 2024.

    _____

    2024 Overland Event Location:

For 2024, we plan on traversing Segments 3 & 4 of the Eastern Mojave Heritage Trail in Southern California. The route will start near Ludlow and conclude in Needles, CA covering approximately 350 miles. This route is far more remote than those experienced on Segments 1 &2 we traveled in 2022.

The trip highlights are many including petroglyphs, old tank tracks, local history, mines, sprawling scrublands, and of course, incredible desert camping opportunities galore!

Dates and Itinerary:  May 11th - May 19th

    • May 11th - Transit Day to Aiken Cinder Mine
    • May 12th - Trail Day 1: Aiken Cinder Mine to Mailbox 3
    • May 13th - Trail Day 2: Mailbox 3 to Granite Pass
    • May 14th - Trail Day 3: Granite Pass to Hole in the Wall
    • May 15th - Trail Day 4: Hole in the Wall to Lieser Ray Mine
    • May 16th - Trail Day 5: Lieser Ray Mine to Raiders of the Lost Arch
    • May 17th - Trail Day 6: Lost Arch to Eagle Pass
    • May 18th - Transit Day: Eagle Pass to Needles to Home
    • May 19th - "Situation" Buffer and Optional Transit Day

As always our pace will depend on a variety of factors including road conditions, speed, interest in stops, etc. Please check back as the itinerary is being put together.

    Registration:

    • Cost per driver is $65, $30 per Passenger
      • Members will get a discount and get first grabs at the open slots before we open this to the public.
      • The registration fees will go towards T-shirts, patches and other goodies - we aim to make this a break even event.
    • Registration is LIVE! --> https://forum.norcalrovers.org/store/
    • Registration will be limited to 15 vehicles in order to maintain a manageable event.

    Difficulty & Vehicle Requirements:

Stock vehicles are certainly welcome and will likely have no issues on the trail. While the trail is certainly not easy in all places, I expect we can get everyone through without major difficulty.

Adventure trailers are welcome, but expect hitch dragging and tight quarter maneuvering.

    Things to expect:

    • Pinstripes are 100% going to happen. Divorce yourself from your paint now.
    • There are many steep drops and rises in and out of washes, depending on what this year's winter brings, the roads could be fine, or a washed out disaster. Vehicles that have low profile front and rear bumpers may see scuffing/contact.

    Minimum Vehicle Requirements

    • Mechanically Sound Rover (as best as they are)
    • Working E-Brake/Parking Brake
    • 30" tires including full-size spare
    • Recovery Points front and rear
    • Center Differential Lock (CDL) (or other modern equivalent)

    Minimum Gear Requirements:

    • Enough water for each participant for multiple days
    • Extra Fuel
    • Spare parts and tools
    • Tire Repair Kits
    • Fire Extinguisher
    • First Aid kit

    Recommended Vehicle Requirements and gear:

    • Armor (rear bumpers, diff guards, sliders)
    • Working winch
    • Vehicle Jack and Tire patch kit
    • Shovel
    • Modern Rovers w Air Suspension should have a SYA kit, air lockout kit equipped, or a GAP tool and know how to use it.

  5. Wow! Bravo! Nicely done Robert!

The progress is looking great. I love the home brew machine shop.

Also... I think you may now have as many vice grips as a body shop.

Still debating on dropping the LS3 vs. 4.2L into Snowflake when the time comes. One the on side, I've been a fan of the LS3, on the other hand, there is a fully rebuilt 4.2L ready to go in the donor truck...

Of course, watching along intently as this is turning out to be a good guide for the future!

Spotted nor a rover, but a space sausage in Santa Cruz just now. Same triangular side view mirrors as can be seen in the post above. Hmm 🤔

    I cannot confirm nor deny....

Space sausage.... that's a new one. I love it.

  7. Well... it isn't Wednesday and I forgot to take a photo...

But I'll confess I got Johann's LR3 stuck in muck and mire out by the barn today while he was out visiting Don

Even aired down to 20PSI to try and get it out with planks but hard nope from that stuck chubby wubby. A quick yank from the Bubba Rope got it out.

Maybe if Johann reads the forum he will find out.... ; ). Shhhhhh

My new least favorite game, seeing wich is faster the greatest podcast of all time or removing a range rover heater core. But if you are tasked with this horrible job listening to Eric and crew talk rovers and random is a good way to make it go by.

You finally dug in there! : ). I will pretend my visit was your inspiration.

  9. Vehicle Requirements:

    • Chains - chains may be required on the way to camp if CalTrans has chain controls in effect. However, AT / MT tires and 4WD are typically allowed even when R2 chain controls are in place. Plan accordingly.
      • It is recommended you install chains prior to hitting the road if you unfamiliar with them. Check for clearance to all components - brake lines, electrical etc.
    • Tires - all vehicles should have Mud Terrain or All-Terrain tires fitted and a full size spare. Expect to air down at the trail-head.
    • Recovery Points - vehicles should have points in front and rear - expect to get a yank!
    • Other great gear:
      • Fire Extinguisher
      • Hi-Lift or other jacking equivalent suitable for your vehicle.
      • Snow Shovel
      • First Aid Kit
      • Repair tools and spares
      • Tire Pump / Compressor
      • Emergency blankets / water /food

    Clothing:

    • Pack warm layers
    • Pack warm bags
    • Sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended as it may be snowy and sunny!

Bring firewood! We will burn it all!

    Bay Area Convoy Details:

We will plan on the main trail run to occur on Sunday. This gives folks the Saturday to make it up to the camping area. As this event is held on President's day weekend, many may have Monday off of work and school. I'll be trying to get up there by Friday night to ensure we have a site.

Here is some video from past events to get everyone exited!
