Sorry to see you can't make it I'm sure someone might be interested in it. Also there are plugins at all the campsites so you could bring a little extra heater and be nice and toasty in a tent.

Thanks Lutz. I'd love it make it work, and props to Miles for bringing his little. Potential for snow and sub-freezing nights, wife/youngins don't stand a chance.

  2. That's pretty much the nuts and bolts. It's about not loosing heat. Some finer points I've learned over the years: Bathroom stuff. Apparently trying to hold your bladder overnight when full of fluid will cause you to sleep colder because your body is having to heat that internal liquid. One of the best points I ever learned at this age where I need pee once a night. Just let it go. Don't try and hold it. And on that point your dedicated nalgene pee bottle in the tent is your best friend. :)

I recently upgraded to the Exped megamat that everyone raves about after my cheapy air bed from Wally World deflated on me overnight on a scout trip. The Exped lives up to the hype. Highly recommended.

For 0 degree bags you don't have to go nuts on price anymore. You can pickup a nice synthetic zero bag from Kelty for about $100.

What you'll find is you'll end up with your 3-seaon gear, bag, tent, clothing, and then your 4th season stuff. For me, a 20 degree bag in the summer, even in the Sierra, can be too warm too. But it's the 4-season tent where you can spend a lot of money for extreme weather protection and durability.

Obviously there's a big difference between cold weather camping, which can be nice, versus inclement weather camping, which is kinda a pain.

The las thing I've learned from cold camping with kids is to always have Hot Hands and tape. We like to tape the hot hands onto our kids thermals right onto their backs. That will definitely work for adults too and keep you warm.

  3. Stick to 265/65 for the LR4, especially if you want to maintain your spare down there and keep it highway friendly. As others have found, best to stick to a tire that is as least more readily available if things go bad like the BFG AT or the Ridge Grappler, which I run. There's tons of info out there LR4 specific; but no need to reinvent the wheel. :)

  4. Great pics and nice to meet you Martin. We had to boogie out earlier this morning. The rain and cold was messing with the head cold that developed on Friday. Looking forward to seeing the album. It was my first time and excited to go back when we can run the full trail. Pesky gate closures. 😏 It was great seeing folks from Mojave and meeting other members we hadn’t met before!

Well everyone, I am sad to say....the covids have finally got me. I feel lucky to have made it 2 1/2 years eluding it.

I won't be able to make it for this trip anymore but stepping into my very large shoe will be @Mr.BlueSky.

Hope everyone has a great time and make sure @RobertDingli goes through all the puddles!

Ah bummer man! Hopefully you have a mild case and get better asap.

Henry, Theresa, and myself will be there!

In speaking with Mario, he may not be able to get up there early on Friday. So if anyone is wanting to leave early Friday morning I'm happy to lead a group into camp from the Bay.

I'll adjust meetup points accordingly based on folks attending.

I’d love to tag into the Convoy in the Geyserville or Cloverdale areas, assuming you madmen aren’t taking 1 all the way…. Yeah it’s “1” here in NorCal.

    Fires and Forest Orders

Currently two forest orders are in effect, the first prohibits all open flame fires whether it be in a grill, firepit, portable pit, or otherwise.

The second and third forest order have closed some hiking trails and picnic sites but should not affect us.

Forest Orders are attached for your reading pleasure.

If you wish to have a portable gas powered stove or other device you must fill out your campfire permit here:

Am I reading the Order wrong? Doesn’t it specifically exempt the campground from the fire restrictions?

    1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, except within the Designated Wilderness Areas listed in Exhibit A and the Designated Recreation Sites listed in Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(a).
