New Years on the Mojave

Recommended Posts

UPDATE: We've reached 5 interested parties which is where I'm going to cap it.  Please reply below if you'd like to be added to the waitlist.

UPDATE 2: Added NCLR Caravan plan to the first post.

UPDATE 3: Final details and cost - also, we have room for 3 additional trucks!

Many of you know that AZLRO (Arizona Land Rover Owners Club) helped put on the WNLRR (Western National Land Rover Rally) last year and a handful of us had the opportunity to attend.  During this time, we met several members of the Arizona club and developed a friendship over campfires and Land Rover love!

I have been talking with Kelly and Grace Howard of AZLRO (mother and daughter) and as Grace has just recently received her driving permit and is planning and leading (along with her dad, James) one of her first trips to Mojave, I suggested a joint NCLR/AZLRO trip and they were excited at the prospect of a collaboration!

Grace is currently planning most of the trip and Jared and I will be their tail gunner.  The trip is titled New Years on the Mojave and will run from Dec. 29 - Jan. 1 (4 days)

We are currently seeking interest so we can decide weather or not a permit will be needed (dependent on the number of vehicles, whether or not we split the groups up, etc, etc...all will be determined at a later date.)  Grace is looking into how far in advance we need to apply for a permit and insurance, and if needed, there will be a cost to attend the trip that will cover the cost divided among the attendees.  Again, this will all be determined at a later date.

AZLRO currently has 4 vehicles that have shown interest, including Kelly and Grace.

Below is the brief itinerary:

Day 1

9am Meet at Avi Casino

Head to trailhead

Go to Picture Canyon

Visit Fort Piute

Detour

Head to Campsite detour, maybe at old schoolhouse (depends on group size)

Day 2

Visit Visitor Center

Visit mailbox and springs

Camp

Day 3

Finish at I-15

Please reply to thread if you are interested and you may view their event post HERE.  If you have an questions, please let me know and I discuss with our neighbors in AZ.  Looking forward to seeing some of you on the trail!

NCLR Final Details

So, we are almost 1 week away from the Mojave trip.  Yay!  Firstly, I got a notice from Grace last night that they've had a couple drop outs, so if anyone else from NCLR would like to go, we have spots for 3 more trucks.  Any last minuters?  :D

Also, the Preserve approved our permit and confirmed that we don't need group insurance just your vehicle coverage insurance, so please bring proof of that.  We will be splitting the cost of the permit with AZLRO so please bring some cash.  Currently it's $8.00 per truck, but if we get more attendees the price will go down per truck.

AZLRO forum post can be found HERE.

Additional Info:

  1. Fire Wood
    • Everyone must bring at least 3 bundles of firewood.  It will be cold and there is no wood collecting on the Preserve.
  2. On Trail Communications
    • Ham Radio will be primary form of communication, simplex frequency TBD but mostly likely will be 146.460
    • If you do not have a Ham Radio license bring a FRS Radio as we will monitoring that as well.
  3. Gasoline
    • We are planing on traveling around 200 miles between gas stations, so bring extra gasoline if you feel like it is necessary.  We are bringing an extra five gallons just in case.
  4. Traveler's Monument
    • It is tradition to bring a rock from home to put on the Traveler's Monument

If I don't talk to you before Sunday, have a Merry Christmas and see you on Wednesday.

Cheers!

Erin

in DECEMBER?  Cold I can get past..what is the contingency for wet?

Currently the weather in late December is supposed to be sunny, partly cloudy on some days, in the high 50's, low 60's during the day and 28-35 at night.

Of course that could all change by then...

Well, looks like Michele will be back in Flatistan (Florida) .... AGAIN .... over this timeframe and it's about $1000 to change the flight back so she's a no-go.  I'm unlikely to do it solo, so it looks like I might be out on this one.  Not 100% out as I have some ideas yet but slim.

OK, I'm in.  Michele can't make it so I'll be solo but that just means an easier camp setup since I can sleep in the truck.   :)

Good to hear Don!  I will touch base with Grace and let her know we have 5 interested trucks, which is going to be our limit.  Waitlist has started.

Thanks for the list management Erin!

Trying to rig an electric bed-warmer for my RTT...! Lol

Well, if you have a secondary battery, an inverter, a HO alt and or solar panels on the rack...I bet you could easily run a heating blanket which would really help.

  • 2 weeks later...

Anything new on this? I joined AZLRO just to be a duallie.

Way to go Paul!  Grace has submitted the permit, she is finalizing some details and hopefully I will hear back next week.

wait... Erin, do participants need to join/reg on AZLRO site?

Hey! Look at that... my 100th post! :)

No, this is a joint trip so that will not be necessary.  Grace and I are in contact so permit details and necessary insurance are pending.  I will update as soon as I have the permit confirmed.  I'm looking into rendezvous points for NCLR to the trail head the day prior.

You might be pleasantly surprised how warm the rtt is once u r off the ground. I was toasty on the Rubicon when it snowed on us.

Wish I could go, but I don't have time off until the 31st. Been wanting to run the Mojave trail for years.

Methinks that the interior of my LWB will somewhat warmer than the RTT, so I am going to go "inside" on this trip and pre-heat my bedding by running my rig for 5 minutes and piping two runs of flex hose directly from my heater outlets under the center cubbie to my sleeping bag. Slam dunk!

So the NCLR team will need to head out on the 28th of December.  I'm looking for some good camping grounds on our way down south and need some suggestions.  I'd like to be no more than 2 hours from the trail head for the next day, so we need to plan at least 4-6 hour drive on Wednesday and if we leave early enough on Wednesday perhaps we can hit some other trails.  Thoughts?
