Out of the loop for a while

As most of you know, I am in the military. I just got picked up for my Advanced course at APG, MD. I'll be driving my LR3 to Maryland around mid October and I'll be there until early March 09. That will obviously take me out of the loop until I get back home. I'm hoping I can catch up with some of you one more time before I have to go, even if it is just a quick Sept or Oct MORG. At any rate, I am looking forward to playing in the snow and the slush over the entire Winter season over there to see how the old Girl behaves and how my Tires perform. Just don't forget me while I'm gone. As the governator said, I'LL BE BACK!

Hey Luis, you're to be around my old stomping grounds. I grew up in Baltimore and have been to APG a few times. In fact, my first helicopter ride took off from there. It would be great to see you at one of the next MORG's to wish you a safe trip. Have fun in the snow, that was one of my reasons for leaving the Right Coast in the first place:D

Hi gang. I just put the finishing touches on the detailed plan for the NCLR Oregon Discovery 2009 trip to be held between June 26 and July 1. The plan in .pdf format is available below.

The sign-up link is available for registration. Go to Event Registration from the main page. You must be signed in to the main site to register.

I've been in touch with the Fremont (Oregon) and Modoc (California) National Forest ranger districts regarding snow and trail conditions. Currently the Cave Lake campground is closed for the winter but they expect it to be open by July first. If this doesn't happen, we'll have to alter our meeting place and the route for the first part of the trek. I'm hoping the warm weather we're having will allow us to follow the plan. Also currently there is about 2 feet of snow along Winter Ridge above Summer Lake. The rangers assured me it will be gone by late June. We'll see.

Hope to see you in Oregon!

how do you think my boys would handle the trip? do you know if there will be any other kids under 6. probably need a lot of videos.

Hey, Mark. We've had a few kids about that age on earlier trips. Don't know about this year. If your boys are into camping I'd think they'll do fine. Lots of great scenery but not too many spots kids would be excited about. There will be S'mores, though. :)

Just found time this afternoon to do the install.

I was amazed at how complete the install kit that was included with the radio was. The only thing I needed to go and get was a couple of crimp on ring terminals for the battery connection. Everything else was included, wire, fuse holders and fuses plus mounting hardware, etc.

I have not made a transmission yet but did pick up some morse code traffic. Obviously I understood every word of it (not).

Looking forward to my next trip and having the better comm set up.

Still need to hook up the GPS for APRS though, maybe in the morning before the meeting.

Hey did not want to comment on the kids till I knew if my boys were coming. They are in camp already by the time this trip starts so I will be solo.

Other kids on the trip last year did really well. Not sure if any are planning to come this year.

Also you know your kids better than us.

Mine tend to hate the long drive to and from, but enjoy the camping and exploring when we get there. It's a trade off that I understand but find hard to get the kids to understand when they are whining in the back:mad:

I am outfitted with a winch now (never used in anger) so that makes two. That will probably be enough if you want to bring your LR3, Will.

We will also need a chain saw in the group.

I also put a pull-pal on the list but not sure it's really necessary.

Didn't you have to use it last year?

You are more than welcome to take mine, just let me know so I'll bring it to Mexxi's and someone can pick it up there.

If shrek, then I can run my electric sawzaw which makes quick work of any fallen tree within reasonable size

I have larger 2 stroke chain saw which I will take gladly if in LR3

If we have one then we won't need it. :D Probably the chainsaw would be best but I'll let you choose. We did chop our way through a 10 inch tree last year.

That would be great, Enrique. I'll think on it and let you know in the next couple weeks.

I am a bit disappointed Will...seems like the Oregon trip is a REASON to buya winch NOW, to protect that investment...and somewhere to mount it and the line, and the second battery and then the sliders for aded protection, and then a mounting point or two...and a snorkle, you may be winching out of water, and a roof rack, to hold all the extra gear needed for the rest of us and......
