October MORG: Signal Peak Day Trip/Overnight Oct. 7-8

Recommended Posts

Back to Signal Peak we go!

Who: Anyone with a stock rover can make this trail, depending on who is attending and what vehicles they bring will determine our route as there are a couple ways to do it. So make it known if you are going and I'll update this post as a plan forms.

What: A trip up to the top of Signal Peak and the site of a C.P.R.R. Railroad Lookout. The trip can be done as a day trip or as a weekend overnight. The plan will be to run the trail in a counterclockwise fashion (up the easy side, down the hard) as we will have some more modern stock trucks and vehicles without front or rear lockers in our group.

When:

  • Daytrippers: Saturday 10:00
  • Overnighters: We can plan on camping Friday and Saturday nights.

Where:

[Daytrippers] Plan to meet at the Lucky's Travel Plaza gas station in Cisco Grove for a 10:00AM departure Saturday morning.

  • 90 Cisco Rd, Soda Springs, CA 95728

[Campers] For those headed up Friday, plan to camp here just off the beginning of the Fordyce Trail - Saturday morning we will work our way over to the Travel Plaza to pick up the day trippers.

Communication:

  • We will be on 146.460 per usual.
  • My cell is 402.741.0231 if you need to get a hold of me.

Some reading on the trail:

We have another gentleman (non-member) that is going to join us on this run (day trip for him) to check out the club. So we will keep the Cisco Grove meeting point.

If folks know of close by/easy campgrounds let me know, otherwise I will find some options.

I plan to come on Friday night and camp. I wonder if we can try the same place we used last year. It’s a few hundred meters up the Fordyce trail and any stock trucks should be able to get there. We had four rigs and there was space for a few more…

First post updated with Friday night camping location and new details.

Sad news on our part - we had a well possibly run dry over the weekend and I'll be needed on the home front to get that resolved (I'm also just coming out of a nasty illness on top of it all) so we have to bow out as trip leaders.

I had spoken to Sasha late last week to take over as trip leader, and based on all of the attendees, we have a solid, capable bunch, so no one should be in for a bad time. : ).

@SDS if you need the first post details changed let me know and I can make corrections.

Have fun everyone!

Ah, I just realized that Miles already posted coordinates and the map of the camping spot in the First Post of the thread.

Thank you Miles!

I just want to add that despite the google’s photo next to the map, the camping spot is in the woods right next to the road.

The road to the spot is not difficult, but I definitely plan to use the off-road suspension height on my LR3.

I plan to be there around 3pm and will have my radio on 146.460. My phone is 831.295.3879. I don’t remember if I had reception there.

Unfortunately I need to bow out of this one.  Eldest is getting married in OR on the 15th and I need to head up there to sort out food and drama....

Sigh.

Happy trails my friends.

Congratulations! Father of the Bride?

This was prob one of the more memorable MORG for me. Fantastic company, fun trails and explored trails and the area on a relaxing pace.
Thanks to Sacha & Mike for leading the trails for this trip.
Special thanks to all the doggies for keeping the bears 🐻 away while we slept!
We spent part of Saturday running Signal Peak in reverse. The Saturday afternoon was spent exploring near by trails. We came across a really nice campsite right on a slow moving river (water temp was 55°F). It has 2 big fire pits and a big serving/prep table! We hung out there for prob an hour. Eric, Mike, Sacha and the doggies went a dig and a swim in the river. We also had no less than 3 water crossings.
On Sunday morning, we relaxed by the camp fire and didn’t leave camp until about 11. We worked our way through a trail toward I-80, As we were airing up at a pull off, a person rolled up in an ATV and asked if we’re ok and that we’re on private property. It was only then did we noticed the private property- no trespassing sign on a telephone pole in front of where we stopped. Evidently,  we unknowingly drove through some private property. The property wasn’t marked (as far as i can tell) on the trial and none of us noticed it on the various maps we were using. At least not until the guy on the atv showed it to Mike. Now we know, and knowing is half the battle!

Participants:

- Eric, Merlyn, Sierra & Toby in their overlanding RRC with RRC trailer

- Sacha & Belka in their LR3

- Leigh Ann & Mike in their Defender 110

- Gabriel in his RRC

- Cris (me) in a Defender 90
