Evoque Ecoboost engine swap

This is when I started to dive into the surprisingly deep world of Ecoboost engines. There are many similarities and differences between all the models. I was also shocked by what an engine would price just because it came from a JLR product.

Evoque Engine (used eBay) goes for around $4000
Ford Focus ST engine (used eBay) can be had for around $1500 (and it is proving to be superior, more on that later)

A big issue on the Evoques has been the cracking exhaust manifold. Focus ST engine has an integrated manifold, Evoque does not. Piston failure also appears to be an issue on the Evoque and less on the Focus ST. Focus builds pushing 300+whp are fine on the stock bottom end. I suspect the Focus ST may have superior engine internals.

I know these cars are failing constantly but my buddy just sold one of these to a tech for $2500 it too had a engine failure.. I considered taking it but a used engine is average $4k.. how much is an ecoboost?? won't you need to referee it?

Range Rover uses a Ford Ecoboost 2.0 engine, just a slightly different variant. From my research it appears they used a naturally aspirated version off the n/a focus and adapted oil/coolant fittings for the turbocharger. *this is speculation as of this point*

It is a near identical engine. Most of the differences appear to be the turbo charger and a few small connectors. I got transmission and cooling system bolted up to Focus ST engine yesterday.

Just got it bolted up into the engine mounts. Everything for the most part has gone fairly smooth. I'll update thread with pics of things I had to change. So far this is looking like a promising way to save money on Evoque/Discovery Sport engine failure (which is very common). 

I hope it doesn't turn out like the kit car build I was involved in back in my teens.  Everything was going great, we had substituted better parts (mainly Porsche in place of VW) and had everything lined up and running.  Wasn't until the test drive that we realized why others didn't do the same transaxle swap that we had.  We had four reverse gears and one forward!  By using the 'wrong' transaxle, we'd changed the drive direction.

Same motor for the most part, I owned a ST for some time recently and just sold it. Anyways... Ford was completely out of stock on the turbo from the dealer and I ended up using a evoque one with light modifications and everything worked out.

Started the car yesterday for the first time. Moved it 20 feet. I have no catalytic converter at the moment, it should show up tomorrow. I'll update with pics. etc. I have a goal to get out on the freeway next weekend. 

@graemeware- luckily I was able to keep my 9 forward gears and 1 reverse gear. lol

Got it in and logged 40 miles yesterday and today. I met a real Catch 22 on the downpipe. I welded the flange from the evoque on a Fiesta ST downpipe and being FWD, the catalyst nearly hits the PTU and it hits the driveshaft.
For now I removed the rear driveshaft and i've been running my Evoque FWD. It surprisingly doesn't change the demeanor of the car on the street.
I have a few faults I have to de-bug. I have three codes I need work through. I have a P0234 for overboost (i need to check the wastegate crack pressure on the two turbos, could be different). I also have a code for the oil temp sensor (I didn't swap pans and this new pan has no hold for the sensor arg). I also have a slightly high idle, probably an air leak somewhere.

Anyways, 5 steps forward and 2 steps back, but project is coming along. The real crux of the whole project is the downpipe. It's a real game of inches and I'm going to have to make my own if I want to have AWD again.

Very cool.  What's the relative power gain?  And more importantly, is it so similar looking that it'll pass smog visual 'under the radar', or will you have to referee it?  Because ain't nobody go time for that CARB crap....

Power between the two should be relatively the same. Only real change being cylinder heads and pressure actuated wastegate/vs vacuum. Its so similar looking it should fly through any smog station. The only way to really tell is by putting it on a lift and and looking at the exhaust manifold. You would have to know Evoque/Disco sports to know the difference. 

The biggest reason to do this swap is cost. Engine failure is common. My JLR cost on the long block is now around $6000

eBay tends to be around $4000

Focus ST engines go for $1500. 

 

Given the minor amount of work is has taken to adapt the two engines, I feel it has been worth it.

Nice story and swap.

I believe the Ford 2.0 turbo is the same one they first introduced in the 2013+ LR2's. (Wife has 87k miles on her LR2...and it's running well. *knock wood*)

Subsequently, that 2.0T gets added to Disco Sport, Evoque, etc
