January MORG - Recovery clinic @ Frank Raines

Recommended Posts

We're a week off, but for January I'll be hosting a recovery clinic on the 11th at Frank Raines OHV Park.

As usual, we'll meet at the entrance at 10:00.  As we get closer we'll organize convoys from east and west.  For those of you coming in from I5, I'll be at the Starbucks in Paterson approx 9:00, leaving for FR at 9:15.

As usual, MORGs are open to any Rover, not just club members.  For this clinic, feel free to invite your non-Rover 4wd friends as well.  Unless they drive Toyotas.  I mean, we do have a standard to maintain.   :P

DO bring lunch

DO bring your radio - there's no cell service at the park so we'll be on 146.460

DO bring your rain gear - it's January in NorCal; rain is always possible

Feel free to reach out to me via PM or WhatsApp chat if you have any questions!

I would like to try wenching my Landy backwards using my own wench and 3 snatch blocks. I have been told it is possible but I haven't seen it done before.

Totally possible to winch backwards using a front winch, but remember one thing.  If you're moving a 5000lb vehicle out of mud you may need more than 5000lbs effective force.  The reason a pulley system works in this scenario is because you have 2 x 5000lb at the back against 1 x 5000lbs at the front, so it is the difference causing the motion.  It also means that the benefit of using a snatch block is only to reverse the motion, not to multiply the force (the normal reason for using a snatch block).  So you'll need a good winch to really make this useful (although demonstrating it works on the flat is easy, and should work for any winch).  Add two more snatch blocks and it works even better!

Regards,

Graeme

Fortunately, I will be in Australia at this time. Otherwise I could have shown you how to flip a disco onto its side.

Thanks, but I've got that covered already.   :P

We can set that up as a demonstration.  It takes a lot of line but I'll have my extensions with me.   Since there aren't any trees in the that area we'll just position a couple trucks to act as anchor points.    It's a neat trick!

I absolutely wanted to be at this one to learn more about recovery, but unfortunately will be working a crab feed.   Great idea to run a clinic such as this!

Wanted to make this but alas my beloved 49ers need my yelling at the television support to overcome the Viking raiders from the north.

Go Niners!

Not sufficient grounds for missing an event.

Saturday is also the 2nd Supercross race of the season but I'll record it and watch later.  I'm willing to make that sacrifice.

Have fun tomorrow guys! I am out of town this weekend and will not be able to make it. Please take lots of photos and we can make a shared album. It will be fun for us who cannot attend to live vicariously through you guys, plus I always need some social media fodder to use.

I'll be joining in my blue LR3 with winch and various recovery gear.  Just hoping it's not as muddy as the last time we were there.

Also, will we be covering submerged vehicle recovery as well?

You sink it, I'll pull it out.

Thanks for volunteering!

I'm heading out in about 10 minutes.  I'll be at the Starbucks in Patterson at 5 and Del Puerto Canyon until about 9, then I'll head for the park.

If anybody plans to join me you can text my cell at 510-825-5056 or try me on 146.460.

See you there!
