Quick reminder that campfire permits expired on December 31. They're legally required, free, and take 5 minutes to renew/get one. There's a 2 minute video and 10 question easy quiz. I always print it out and throw it in my rig's glove box. https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/campfire-permit/

I'll probably get there around 5.
3 hours ago, DHappel said:Sounds like there is a Jeep event going on at SlickRock, so maybe I'll just be a wimp and bring the L322. Michele will appreciate that at least.
Should roll out around 1pm and be up there around 3-4pm
I bet she will.

I'm assuming it was posted behind that firewall b/c the annual is a member's only event. I'm posting the link here b/c I assume it will still be accessible to members only (but if that's not the case I can edit this and remove the link -- just let me know if that's the case Miles/Eric/Greg....)

I hope to be able to make this work!

Well, what I did today was kicked myself for being a D2 owner. I'm now shopping for a short block.
As luck would have it, the 2018 Western National Land Rover Rally rig is in need of a new engine. Why is that you might ask -- wasn't it a rebuilt engine? Very good questions for which I have no answers. What I do know is that I've got a lot of shop time into a bad engine block (so that's going to be a few grand), have machined heads, and am in need of a short block. Please let me know if you have any leads. . . .

Agreed, very nice write up Eric. Glad your diff didn't go out while you were packing down the snow for everyone to go around the D5, etc.....

I'm planning to go for the day. Because I'm a day tripper, I'd like to roll with the first group (because history suggests we'll be waiting at the 76 for some straggler).
By the way, I believe Mike is planning to meet us right before we turn down the short road into the town of washington (because he's coming in on 20 from i80 westbound). The overlook is right before we turn left and go down the hill into the town.

I'm 50/50 for a trip to Bowman. I'd need to be back on the pavement by about 5:30 in the evening so that I can make an obligatory appearance at an xmas party I can't ditch. I'll follow along to see what the plans are so I can assess what time folks will likely hit the trailhead and what time folks will probably make it back to pavement. Sunset is around 4:45 nowadays, so I'm assuming folks will want to be well on the way back out of Bowman by then. By the way, Jaimy and I drove to Loon Lake today. About 2' of snow (maybe 3') at that elevation (6400') at about 3 p.m., with another 3 feet likely on the way. Forecasts suggested Bowman (5500' at lake level) could get a pretty good dump of snow before this system is done.

Just got a permit for two trees for American River.
Is there interest in camping for a night or two? Just got a hot tent with wood stove on the way that I'm stoked about getting set up in the wild.
I've given thought to buying a hot tent one of these days, but the set ups I've looked at are pretty expensive for how often I'd likely use it (over $1k). Did you find something you think was a reasonably priced less than that??

I did just bite the bullet and am waiting for my wife to ask me why I spent nearly 10x what an expansion tank should cost. I think this is in the private forums so I can just say that's what they cost, right?!

I think for the money it's not bad, hoses are cheap... suggest buying two for spares.

I'm debating buying one -- definitely not two $300 expansion tanks. You've always had a penchant for spending other people's money Greg. lol

@elherbinator suggested that rather than just asking around I post this in the forum b/c it might be useful for others to see responses.
I'm about to replace on of my coolant system hoses, which has caused me to think I ought to replace them all. That, in turn, got me to thinking about what else I should do while I'm at it -- which led me to expansion tanks. My 2004 D2's tank seems just fine, but I'd rather replace it will it seems fine than wait until it's not so fine.
Anyway, obviously an aluminum expansion tank offers more peace of mind, but is it really worth all that extra dough when I can buy a regular one for way, way less. In other words, how badly do I need this mod which will inevitably be at the expense of other mods I'd like to make? Unfortunately it's just one pot of money.
Now I'm wondering if I ought to replace the water pump, too....and what else while I'm in there with everything opened up.

I would like to go -- but am not committing just yet. So if I understand correctly, unlike the WNLRR event there's no event-based group camping such that folks go their separate ways in the evening unless they're linked up like folks are contemplating here?
The GARR website currently says:
Currently, we are trying to coordinate camping for event participants on the Old Spanish Trail Arena property. We will update the event website as this develops with details.
Seems that they've had a couple of years to plan this event so I'm wondering if that's still the case or if they've just thrown in the towel. Whatever this group ends up doing please make room for me -- I need to clear a few things before I 100% commit, but I'd like to join.

That company is horrible. I bought one on November 28, 2020, and could not get it to work after wiring it with Robert. The vehicle was wired correctly, but the unit does not work. They told me I could return it, but then refused to give me an RMA, and their customer/tech support was horrible/terse. I challenged it through my credit card company and they reversed the charge b/c navtool just ignored them. I'd recommend posting your story on the L322 Facebook forums as well. They may actually see the complaint and have more concerns if it's on FB.

My daytrip probability just increased to 99.99%. Overnight probability is at 25.72% (partly because I'd need to be on a paved road by 0800).

Just for my curiosity would the route be from auburn to east 80 to highway 20 exit then up? And if so what kind of speed would we be encouraged to be able to maintain on the freeway. Thanks
I think the proposed route is up through Grass Valley and then head over to Washington. From there the route is to drop down to lake bowman from the northwest side -- as opposed to coming in from below heading upward toward the dam.

Here’s a vid from a Bowman Snow run a couple years ago to get people in the mood

Watching Merlin realize oh crap he's gonna make it, and run up the hill at the 1 minute mark always brings a smile to my face.

Just realized this trip is happening and am trying to make things work. 75% likelihood for me to go up for a day trip. I'd like to camp, but not sure I can really swing that. Just so folks know, it's at least 35 to 45 mins to convoy up to Washington where you hit the trail head. There's nothing in Washington that you'll want to stop and see -- folks in that town are a bit skeery, with no services.

Here's a link to the free online Campfire Permit. Takes 5 minutes and lasts through 12/31 -- nice to have one in the glovebox.

@lutz Regrettably I have to work (recently changed jobs) and need to bow out.
