Moab Sept 2015 - 2 rovers, a jeep and lots of triple IPA

Recommended Posts

Moab is an incredible place to visit, and one of my favorite parts of the country. It is magnificent to explore via offroading, biking, hiking or simply driving through enjoying the scenery. The shear vastness of the area is breathtaking and thankfully has been largely preserved with immense national parks, such as Arches and Canyonlands. I was invited along this trip with my buddy Eric and had an incredible time. We charged to Moab from Rocklin on Tuesday morning leaving the Out of Bounds brewery (which Eric owns) after filling up many growlers and loading up lots of good beer. We arrived late Tuesday night after charging across highway 50 in just 12 hours thankfully seeing very little traffic. A few IPAs hit the spot while we camped at Sand Flats near the entrance to the famous Slickrock mountain biking trail and met up with Ben from Colorado, Mike from Ohio and Aaron from Raleigh.

The next morning, we packed camp early headed for Canyonlands and the famous White Rim Trail. We drove Potash road and climbed up the Shafer canyon switchbacks to obtain our passes. Ben secured Murphy Hogback campground A a few months back after a cancellation. Ben, an avid mountain biker, decided the quickest way back down was on a bike and he went flying down the switchbacks. He biked a few more miles before stopping for lunch at a spectacular lookout over the Colorado river.

Since my P38 was dead in the garage, I took the LR3 and rented my wife a car for the week. We modified Eric's supercharged RR Sport with Johnson Rods and new BFG AT2s in 275/55 R20s. It tackled the trails with ease. These modern rovers are amazing with just some simple mods.

One of my objectives this trip was how to plan for an NCLR trip out there. Moab will blow you away with beauty and trails from easy to rock crawler only. Groups could split  between trail runs. Really need a minimum of 5 days due to 2 full travel days and ideally 7 days would be better.

Murphy Hogback A campsite is outstanding. Hard to find a campsite anywhere in the world to match it. A large rock provided some much needed shade late in the afternoon. It was a long 45 miles from the visitor but well worth the effort. We made camp and watched the stars until falling asleep in our chairs.

The next morning, we kept heading west on the White Rim Trail. Ben and I hopped on the bikes for some great downhill action early on. The washes and sand eventually wore me out after an hour or so of biking. Everywhere on the trail, views are breathtaking. We meandered around some spectacular cliffs and then spotted the banks of the Green River. I kayaked the Green from the town of Green River to Mineral Bottom in 2008. 55 miles of floating in total desolation and absolutely spectacular. We exited the trail and headed back to Sand Flats in Moab in the early afternoon. The second half of the trail seeemed easier going and a bit faster than the beginning. The White Rim Trail should definitely be on the bucket list of any adventure traveler.

White Rim Trail requires permits for any campsite with reservations getting booked a year in advance. At Murphy Hogback, there were three sites, well spaced out but we were the only ones present. Sad for someone to book these sites and then not show up.

We finished White Rim Trail and attempted some mountain biking. Slick rock trail kicked our butts. Next morning we did some canyoneering and rappelling down an awesome cliff. Exciting and a bit unnerving, then the afternoon we hit the Needles district of Canyonlands and did Elephant Hill. Very cool, more challenging trail and then camped at Devils Kitchen.
