We had our 2nd planning session yesterday, and decided to take on Route 3 of the Oregon Back Country Discovery Route(s).

Let's do this trip within June 13-21; we won't need all these days (most likely 5-7 days) and can narrow the number of days needed once we finalize the exact routes, gas stops, camping/lodging, etc.

Will get close to many of the majestic peaks of the Cascade Range and get up to 6000 ft in eleveation. Late summer is the suggested travel time to avoid snow on the trails up in higher elevation; will take our chance in June since it's the best avail travel time for the attendees.

Prepare for cold weather at night, and possible helping clear trees that have fallen on the trail.

Will go North to South, and start at the Santiam Hwy at the HooDoo Big Lake Junction in Oregon (West of Bend Oregon), and End in Dorris, California (see general attached general trip overview map).

I read thru the old gauging interest thread http://norcalrovers.org/forum/index.php?/topic/2926-oregon-run-2015/ and it's best to start a new thread so we can focus on trip planning and questions related to the trip, and not have to go thru dozens of pages on the old thread to see the attendee list, and trip plan details.

We are at the 15 max. Can I confirm again the folks who said they can go or interested on this Oregon Trip. And also create a wait list so folks who drop out can be removed and folks on the wait list be added. Will officially close the wait list on May 15th, and also automatically drop from the list if not confirmed.

Last Update June 7

1) Ron/Max DII Confirmed

2) Erin/Jared RRC Confirmed

3) Rupert LR3/Trailer Confirmed

4) AllysonH DII Confirmed

5) Chris/Family LR4 Confirmed

6) Michal/Family LR4 Confirmed

7) Don/Michele LR3 Confirmed

8) Enrique/Alex LR3 Confirmed

9) Bear & Family LR3 Confirmed

List CLOSED as of May 16th

Reserve below section for Trip Plan Details e.g. route, vehicle requirement, emergency contacts..:

Trip Summary:

We will put together the rest of Trip Planning details including the trail routes/GPS tracks and incorporate Erin/Jared's campground info, and Rupert to fuel stop calculation.

On Saturday June 13, we'll all travel from the Bay Area/Sac Area to Big Lake north/east of Bend Oregon to the start of our

Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route 3 (OBDR) adventure - come close to many of the majestic peaks of the Cascade Range (see pic #7). 378 miles total. 5 days.

Averaging 75 miles a day (more or less depending on the trail). And at the end of our journey, be near the Oregon/California border in a small town called Doris, CA

on Thursday night. Make our way back home to the Bay Area/Sac Area on Friday.

We can leave an extra day in our plan as a cushion just in case of delays e.g. mechanical, scenic... and make our way home Saturday. For now, the plan

is to make our drive back home on Friday.

Saturday:

- Leave the Bay Area in the morning, arrive @ Red Bluff (change to Weed). Rupert to join the caravan, and use this time for brunch and fuel stop (est 187 miles / 3hrs)

Meeting time: between 11-noon.

Place: McDonald's truck parking lot. Address: 1925 Shastina Drive, Weed, CA

- Will cross into Oregon via 97, pass scenic views of Lake Miller, Upper Klamath Lake and Klamath Marsh National Wild Life Refuge.

Will also pass the Deshutes National Forest and then Bend Oregon for fuel stop, and last min shopping (from Red Bluff to Bend is about est 300 miles / 5hr).

Vehicles pulling a trailer will need to stop for fuel sooner.

- Take Hwy 20 to 126 to Hoo Doo Big Lake Junction and to our 1st camp Big Lake before Sunset (from Bend est 48 miles / 1 hr)

Sunday (Start of the OBDR #3)

- Big Lake to Tree Creek Lake

- Sights along the way: we will be traveling on the old Santiam Wagon Road build between 1861-68 to Cache Creek Toll Station History Site.

You got it Justin; you are the 1st on the wait list.

Don, glad to hear you and Michele are confirmed; we will need you to bring a chainsaw; got one? :)

No worries Chirs; that's why I bring the DII when I know comfort/enjoyable ride is needed. Jake has gotten used to the noisy 200TDI but w/my wife and other son, I need some work on them. :)

For now, it will be me and Jake on the CT110!

Ok folks I will try to have route info by MoM this Saturday; come see me, Jared or Rupert if you have any Qs on the Oregon Trip.

Don, this reminds me; we will all be traveling a few hundred miles on hwy roads to get to the trail head, and then about 380 miles on Oregon Back Country dirt roads; something will break in someone's LR and we want to be better prepared to deal with repairs or replacement.

We talked about bringing necessary spare parts list yesterday and the need to coordinate among LR3/LR4s, DIIs, and P38 owners. Only 1 vehicles are 110 (me) and RRC (Erin/Jared).

Can I ask you to work with the LR3/LR4 owners on your parts list. I can help Allyson and Ulises on the DII spare parts list being owner of one even though I am bring my 110. And P38s - Rob and Antonio. Thanks!

And not specific to a LR vehicle, we also talked about needing at least one or two equipment e.g. C02 for putting a tire back on its wheels... More to come on on this list.

Don, I can assist/brainstorm re LR/4 spares parts.

I have a chainsaw too, can bring if need it.

Ron, Do you think I could bring the military trailer on this trip?  With Alex and my daughter Isabel (9), i think i need the extra room. My concern id the low hitch ( I wonder if Pedram can relocate the hitch receiver position).

I'll take the Rods if you still have them.

Let's touch base at the MoM and we can work on LR3 spares.  Honestly, a multi-VIN diag computer would be the single most valuable 'spare'.  I really don't carry much on my rig in the way of spares, though of course I have my GAP IId tool and the usual hand tools, zip ties, duct tape, etc...

Looks like it should be a fun trip.   If its anything like the 2010 Oregon trip that chainsaw is going to get a workout.   Id recommend 2 just to make sure.    Also the more chainsaws you bring the less likely you will need to use them B)

Jason (Friday the 13th) used a machete and wore the goalie mask.

Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) used the chainsaw and victim's skin for a mask.

Freddie Kruger had the glove of knives and his mask was a just a burnt face.

Regarding LR3 spares.

I'll have the typical zip ties, duct tape, etc, but more specifically I'll have:

a sway bar end link

a rear tow link w/bolts

extra 6mm air line end (old end from an air strut)

old thermostat bleeder fitting (changed to brass last year)

It would be good to add a set of belts which I haven't yet got, though I believe some trucks have 5 rib and some 6 rib on the alternator drive belt.  It would also be good to have a 6mm air line union.  I might have one of those from my Green Oval kit that I still haven't installed.

I'll bring the fan removal wrench just in case then. I have a Faulmate but it only reads/clears codes and does not allow me to raise the EAS

Ron,

You can remove my name ad Jason to the list.  I won't make this trip as i decided to spend extra time in Peru instead.   You guys have fun! :-)

I think you mean Justin, right Antonio?  Have fun in Peru and tells us about chewing the coca leaf on your way up to Machu-Pichu when you come back :)

Ron,

Per our last meeting, we discussed making a run from Rupert's place in Red Bluff to our first campsite.  I believe we identified Big Lake as the site closest to the trailhead.  Travel time from Red Bluff to Big Lake, OR is about 6 hours.

Since our plan was to leave Rupert's place around noon, that would put us at camp about 2-2.5 hours prior to sunset.  Does that work or do we need to pull in and arrive earlier?

I checked for reservations at Big Lake campsite - 24 of the 33 spots are still available.  Below are photos from the first campsite - let me know if you want me to reserve spots now.

Jared

Sounds like plenty of time to make camp.  Heck everybody is getting spiffy new rooftop tents - they're only going to need like 45 seconds right?  It will take me longer to get my tent off the roof rack than they need to set up....

But a couple hours should be more than enough time.

As for the view in your pics, I guess it will do if you can't find anything better.
