yeah i got one...no not really. well not yet. a friend of mine recently picked one up and asked me about roof rack options so i told him i'd look into it. i know about the SD racks and voyager. anyone else? incidentally, this same friend goes thru cars like crazy so he'll tire of this soon and i'll swoop it off his hands. i figure i might as well put a rack on it that i like :-)

Hi everyone. It's me again. I finally got around to looking on Craigslist for another project I have been waiting to do. So let me cut to the chase and get down to it.

I bought a used utility trailer for dirt cheap. I wanted to carry anything without needing my truck and having it easy to access. I bought it on Monday and have been busy working on it since. Everyday I put about 4 hours into it. I striped it down to it's frame and found it really needed to be. It was a wooden deck that needed to be pulled before the termites go to it. I'm going P-Fab on this thing.

I'm working on the pictures. For some reason my new phone (aka camera) is not as nice as my older one because it doesn't have a removable SD card. So I have to figure out a faster way to transfer pictures into my photo bucket account. But I have them loading so please be patient.

This is why I felt it was a good idea to tear into it.

It was a great trailer but needed a lot of TLC. This gets better.

Day three....

Time to get the dirt on it.

Hubs are neglected. There is so much grease on them that they have never been even repaired. The seals gave out and there is mud and grease on the hubs.

I picked up all new seals and bearings and cleaned up everything. Repacked the grease and pressed in the new bearings and seals and painted it black. Now I can see it coming together.

After day three I was feeling I got something good going. So I am going to buy metal.... The fun part starts.!!!!

And to answer any questions about my help, He is my friend that works at Americas Tire shop and I did put him to work! :)

Not like I can't do that. But he was really interested in my build. So he lent a hand.

The expanded steel is going on top and the shiny channel metal is the frame support for it. And Another one of those really bad ass cases.

Day four starts

Painted one side so I can flip the sheet over and weld it up so I don't have to flip the entire trailer over to paint and get into the hard to reach places.

I saved some time doing this.

So what do you guys think I need to make this better? I'm going to start adding more soon. I am thinking gates and Tom did make a great starting trailer idea that I wanted to copy. I just have to figure it out on my own. I like the tent on top idea and I don't want to buy a RTT yet. I'm also going with Land Rover wheels. Yes I did!!! I said Land Rover wheels. It's on order.

Should look like this.

U need LR wheels? The trailer looks like it already has 'em? Iit looks like astandard trailer axle and not heavy duty. Also what's the clearance height on this axle?

Well for this application I don't need really heavy duty axles. Even with all you see here I doubt it weighs anymore than 300lbs. I might add another 100lbs in gates. I didn't install the LR wheels either. This is just a mock up for when I do instal them. I just placed the spare tire from the Disco next to my trailer to see what it would look like. If you look close you will see there aren't any lug nuts holding them in place. As far as clearance goes... Well I'll find out if it really does catch. For now I'm not really concerned about that. And if I do hit anything and it holds me up I'll just lift the thing over it. It's only weighs like 200 lbs in all. I can easily move this thing by hand. I walk about 20 ft with it to hook up to my other truck. It's nice to be able to move it around with ease.

I am going with bigger tires later when I do get the LR wheels and that will make rolling over rocks much smoother. I will add some small shocks as well to take some stress out of the bumps on the road. But I'm going to register it tomorrow evening. I go to DMV to get my PTI tags. After it's registered I will see what needs to be upgraded. Right now I'm more concerned about getting the paper work going to get this thing street legal. I hear DMV wants to know the break down of money I spent with receipts to find out how much I need to pay them for Taxes. And since it's never been registered I just tell them I made it from nothing and bought my materials from the store where I had already paid taxes on them there. So I'm keeping the cost down for now. Tuesday if things go right I will buy more metal and do the gates. I have big plans!

Oh and to add to the clearance issue... If I go with LR wheels then that would be the exact match for the towed vehicle. Therefor the clearance would be the same as your car since it matches your wheels and tires. And again if it does become a serious issue I will cut the middle section out and make it much higher. Giving more than your towing vehicle. Right now I have 12 inch tires on it and the center of the hub is much smaller than a 16 inch. So If I do some math I would have to say I have about 5 inches. And if I go with LR wheels that are 16 I have to say that would give me about 7 inches. But I can really go off the wall and make it what ever I want. Since the hub runs on spindle like a Land Rover axle, I can cut the solid shaft that goes from one to the next and make a arch over the center section of the trailer. Or even make it an independent setup. Since some people here really think that this makes a difference.

In my opinion a solid axle with the right suspension will do anything as an independent axle on a single axle trailer. I still don't understand how that works. This can really be a big discussion but I would push it more than this. I just wanted to state my opinion. So please don't try to talk me into it that unless you want me to sell you this trailer in that fashion. I'm not going to waste my time for nothing. If anything I can build both types and prove it. To me it's a joke really. I'm not sitting on my trailer as it moves. I could care less about floating over rocks in my trailer. I doubt I will ever see a road that messed up.

looks great Pedram! A lot of work over a short time. I have another set of the trailer lights I have on my trailer (Off Izusu delivery truck, Red/amber/whire) if you'd like'em.

Take care, Tom

I kinda took into the led lights. Thank you for the offer though. Yeah I did get it done fast. I wanted to get it done so I can use it. I do like your set up so I might copy your idea if you don't mind.

Nice and fast buildup Pedram. Good luck with the registration tomorrow. Are you keeping it as mainly a utility trailer, or making it into more of a camping trailer?

Thank you Brenton. I'm going to use it for camping. But mainly for anything that comes up really. I got it registered today. It was a long day at DMV but well worth it. http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss353/PedramB33/M101%20TAILER/Utility%20Trailer/IMG_20120625_163039.jpg

Great work Pedram. Are you planning to expand you fab skills and make trailers for sale or is this just one-off?

I'm ready for builds. This was easy. I just turned it into something useful. I'm planing on finishing this this week .

I have my trailer, which I debate wether to keep or not. I wish it was a bit different and therefore more useful, but.....at least it has a VIN, plate and the tongue could be moved to a new unit...so I am more than half way there!

Also if you need some work done let me know. I'll hook you up. I will take it to my place and fix it up to your specs. And if you need a trailer to barrow till then I can lend you mine in that time. I might just pick up one of those Tepui tents for this trailer some time in the future. Well as long as the price is right too.

Hey check out this video.... interesting [video=youtube;xI9qSnmpDTk]
