  1. Mike, I expect my wife will be coming but she hasn't confirmed yet with her work schedule. She may just fly into SLC and meet me there.
  2. Thanks Antonio - see what happens when I don't log in here enough? Now I've gone and bought a big van that can do the towing but it won't be as nice as your truck! As for trailering v. driving, I do prefer to drive most of the time but that's a long trip in the topless D1. Plus as I learned with the race cars, even if it's street legal and can be driven to the track you go faster when there's a trailer to get you back home. I'd hate to be in Moab and skip the fun lines just to be sure I have a ride home at the end of the week!
  3. Hmmm.... I moved the Rovers around to allow the vans to get into the shop. Also just tonight decided to start working on the trailer; moved it onto the pad in front of the shop so I'd have light and started trying to remove the lunette ring. I have a socket that big (2 5/16), but can't move it with my impact gun. Not great access, so I couldn't get a long breaker on it. I think I'm going to pick up a set of oxy-acetaline tanks on Friday, then we'll see how tough it is.... (bwahahaha)
  4. Yes - I don't think it's the ideal tow vehicle by any means but at the moment it's all I've got. I've debated endlessly in my head about how how I should handle my towing needs but with this coming up relatively fast it's unlikely I'll get something new before then.
  5. Oh by the way, if anybody happens to come across a good deal on a trailer that can handle a 6000 lb load feel free to pass that along my way!
  6. I have it on my calendar. Now I have to figure out the details. Drive the D1 the whole way? Take the D1 and only do the 'wheeling' bit at Moab itself? Buy a tow rig and trailer and haul out the D1? Tow the D1 behind the LR3, drop it in Moab, and use the 3 for the Kokopeli bit then the D1 for Moab? So many possibility. I can say that doing all of it in the D1 doesn't seem especially appealing as it's not a great highway or overland truck, and I'm not sure how well the LR3 would do towing it all that way even if it is within it's rated tow capacity. Certainly wouldn't be setting any speed records going over the passes like that!
  7. OK, you have my interest. Been wanting to get the D1 out there, but not sure if I'd drive it out or tow it. Seeing how the LR3 is my only tow vehicle right now, and I don't actually have a car hauler, and March isn't that far away....I suppose I'd be doing it the hard way.
  8. Somebody on Insta commented that the bit looks soft. I asked if I should introduce it to a nice female hex...
  9. Come to think of it, it looks like some of MY old axle shafts too! And it was just a standard 3/8 long handle ratchet. Was just using the bit to hold a ball joint while I ran down the nut.
  10. I didn't so much do stuff to my Rover as help Antonio do stuff to his. Changed front and rear diff and transfer case oil Replaced front rotors and pads Replaced front lower control arms. While under the truck we found a couple other items to address. Namely the front diff breather doesn't seem to be breathing (it shot oil out all over me when I pulled the plug!) and the front CV on the rear driveshaft appears to be leaking. Neither should be too hard to address. We also looked a bit at an odd intermittent suspension error but didn't come to any conclusions. He sometimes gets a warning that only standard height is allowed but there are no suspension codes when it happens so I'm not sure where to look. Compressor seems to be working fine as does the rest of the suspension. I suspect there must be something other than a suspension issue causing this but it's going to be difficult to pin down without a better starting point. I also managed to destroy a new SK 'made in the USA' 4mm hex bit ... have to say I'm a little disappointed in that one. Sure it's warranty but you have to send the part back to them then wait for a return. Everybody has lifetime warranty these days but the reason you pay more for a quality tool is so you don't have to use it! Otherwise I could just stop by harbor freight and swap it today.
  11. So what I'm hearing is you'll be at next year's Shaver run, right?
  12. Well, yesterday I straightened the wheel I bent on my night Rubicon rescue mission and got the pressure washer after the bottom of the truck in preparation for giving everything a good inspection the next time I get home for more than a day.
  13. Hey, aren't you supposed to be working on the RRC?
  14. Good call, and just in time. That blond guy looks pretty sketchy. Definitely up to no good!
  15. Ah, at first I thought that was going to be an LS motor, but I see it's the last version of the venerable SBC. If not for the smog issues I'd seriously be looking at doing an LS swap in my D1. I know it can be made legal, I just don't want to jump through the hoops of figuring it all out.
  16. I only got one side on. Still have to do the other side and may want to tweak fitment some more yet. Pics will come eventually.
  17. I spent this evening cutting fenders back and installing new Terrafirma flares. Lucky8 claims they will fit 37s on a 5" lift. Lucky8 lies...
  18. ooh! How much for the crunchy one? (eager to see the inside of that unit actually)
  19. I finally got around to replacing the broken strut on the front of the LR3. This should be a simple job, but I managed to drop a nut that fell between the rotor and the dust shield - meaning I had to pull the caliper, caliper carrier, and rotor off to retrieve the silly nut!
  20. I've done it on the D1 when we did Graeme's underdrive. It's not that bad, but I can see where being pre-stretched may be helpful.
  21. To quote that most luminous automotive commentator: How hard can it be?
