July 20-22: Weekend at Mendocino NF

Recommended Posts

Yeah, it's pretty bad up here. The River fire started in Mendocino county and spread west right up and over Cow Mtn. and right to the outskirts of Lakeport. We had to evacuate, it came within about three miles of us. The Ranch fire spread from Mendocino county also into Lake county and is currently burning well into the Mendocino Nat'l Forest and headed towards the Snow Mtn. Wilderness. Ceder Camp, the site of the annual Mendo Recce is within the burn area and is most likely gone, it's almost to Letts Lake and Stonyford. This area is within Colusa county, so this sucker covers three counties as of now.

Here's a live fire map which shows the area burned. The Green grid and outline show the total burned area, the red dots indicate current hot spots, the orange ones are within the past 12 hours and the yellow are the past 24 hours. Click on the layers icon on the panel to the left and then click on Aerial for a satellite view with better contrast.

They're making huge progress on both fires. The River, which is the one closest to us, is almost completely contained now and even the Ranch fire is looking a lot better this morning. I'm flying to WA. this morning and will continue to monitor things from up there but feeling a lot more comfortable about leaving today.
