Disco2Guy
Time to start thinking about the first trip of 2015. This will be the 8th year of the Shaver trip, and should have some good wheelin' for everyone. For those who have never been, please read the following info about the trip, and post any questions you may have. For the veterans we're keeping with the same formula as in the past. If you want to be part of the group who makes a campsite reservation, let me know. The plan is to send all of the requests in one letter or fax (from me) with everyone's contact info and desired campsite number. The area is known for abundant outdoor activities: snow skiing, snowmobiling, water skiing, fishing, and backpacking, horseback riding, 4-wheeling and camping. Camp Edison has heated bathrooms with shower facilities (tokens can be purchased with quarters on the way in), and electrical outlets for each campsite. The breakers can trip easily, so please talk to your camp mates about any heaters or equipment with high power needs you may be using. Ruts, whoops, drifts, ice, are all common ways to crunch a panel. If you stop forward movement, do not spin your wheels. The friction melts the snow and then freezes into ice, reducing the quality of the trail surface. Vehicle Requirements: Chains- Chains may be required on the way to Camp Edison. If you have street tires and plan to hit the trail, you will need two sets of chains. If you have not installed chains before, please test fit them before the trip. Check for clearance issues around brake or ABS lines as well as tire wells during articulation. Stock vehicles (without chains) should remain at Camp Edison and find someone to ride shot-gun with on Bald Mountain. Tires- All vehicles should be fitted with All Terrain or Mud Terrain tires and have a full sized spare. A tire repair kit is recommended. Recovery Points- Strong recovery points front and rear are a must. Expect to pull someone (or yourself) from either end of your truck multiple times. Required Safety & Recovery Equipment: Fire extinguisher, Hi-Lift and/or X-Jack (at least one vehicle carry one), winch (every other vehicle is optimal), recovery strap (each vehicle should have their own)Metal shovel (shovel snow), first aid kit, repair tools and spares to suit your vehicle, tire gauge and tire pumpEmergency overnight pack of food, water, blanket Trail Communications: HAM radio 146.460 (simplex) Shaver Lake Repeaters146.820- 141.3 KE6JZ CB (channel 7) Clothing Suggestions: Snow/winter clothing- layer with base clothing that wicks sweat, polar fleece, wind/water repellent shell jacket or winter jacket; winter gloves, hat or beanie, and snow boots. Be prepared for rain/sleet as well. Sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended. Food / Meals: Meal plans: BYO, or plan with othersAfter the trail we stop at the local pizza joint in Shaver Lake for a warm delicious sit down dinner. Misc Items to Bring: Camera and extra batteries, winter tent, sleeping bag and blankets, extra garbage bags, GPS unit, map of the area and compass, drinking water, fire wood

yarrover
Waiting for this a long time. Me and Nikhila are in. Questions. 1. Does Stock street tires work with chains on trials(Allseason tires)? (255/55/19) Can't air down much? Planning to get new tires (BFG KO2's) but not sure if they get shipped by then and installed as they have no confirmation yet on stock arrival. 2. repair tools and spares to suit your vehicle- LR3's ( any suggestions what parts might be most needed during this trip) Cant wait for the trip. Honestly, I don't carry much in the way of spares for the LR3. Modern Rovers don't break. I have basic hand tools, zip ties, wire, duct tape, etc, plus my GAP tool. Knock on wood, but so far I haven't needed my tools on the trail. I'm really interested to see how the new BFGs work. I've heard they are the best AT tire out for snow - supposed to be far better than the old TAs, and even better then the Duratracs. If you don't have the new tires yet don't worry, chains on stock tires will generally work very well - even better than most AT tires, especially if it gets icy. DHappel
My babies due date.... Sorry. Going to miss out. But I want to follow this thread. I'll watch from the side lines. I suspect that we may see a lot less of Pedram next year. I was going to say he may also have less hair when we do see him, but he doesn't exactly have that much to start with... psykokid
Hey guys, this is Jake from SCLR. I've posted a thread on the SCLR forum to gauge interest there as well. After missing this trip for the last few years for one reason or another I've got the time off for this year's trip penciled in for sure on my Calendar so I'll be there with a copilot. I'll let you know how many people from SCLR to expect as soon as I hear back on my forum post..

Disco2Guy
First post updated with the latest attendees. Given the number of trucks that will probably be on this trip, it might be wise to do a recce on Friday to see if we should have an early group. We'll know what to expect for Saturday and make our plan of action around the campfire.

We'll know what to expect for Saturday and make our plan of action around the campfire. Not a bad idea at all. I might be up for coming in a day early. We may also want to break the run into two groups depending on how many rigs we have. Say one that wants to leave early (7:30 maybe?) and one who wants to sleep in a bit (9:30?) Michal C
I also should be leaving the Bay Area early on Friday (6ish) and thus should be by the campsite around noon or in early afternoon.
