I figured I would start somewhere with this and do a little write up. Figured this would be the section to place it in.

So this isn't my rover but it's been in my hands for a few weeks. Mostly just resting. But when I was done it got used.

This is Jared's Classic. It was his idea that turned this into a real product. He approached me with an idea and I agreed to take it on.

People know I just build things as I go. Word of mouth travels fast. I don't mind. It's a test to my skills. So back to the build.

So here is day one.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/PBastan/P-Fab/Classic%20Build/IMAG0675_zpse1tbtgth.jpg

Jareds' idea was to copy this as close as possible. From these pictures you can't tell much be he has the original photos to go by.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/PBastan/P-Fab/Classic%20Build/20283_zps3bdda0f5.jpg

So my plan of action was to build the ladder first.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/PBastan/P-Fab/Classic%20Build/IMAG0677_zps7dln1qak.jpg

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/PBastan/P-Fab/Classic%20Build/IMAG0679_zpsovktfnt6.jpg

My idea was to make this ladder better but safe. I didn't have to much to go by and was given a little instruction to start with. Also I was given a little freedom to explore. So this is what I came up with.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/PBastan/P-Fab/Classic%20Build/IMAG0681_zpswzmhvjof.jpg

By welding on these 4 tabs I can have a removable point here.

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a618/PBastan/P-Fab/Classic%20Build/IMAG0683_zpstqcnt3fv.jpg

Then the other half would have to mount to the glass frame here.

After some thoughts and guessing this is what my plan was. The welded angles slide inside the bigger tube. Acting like a telescope. When you open the glass upwards the ladder has to move since the pivoting points on the ladder and glass are different. We have two different moving points and two different angles.

This test run was not final.

So far it looked good but wasn't ready. I called Jared and told him I have a few issues with my design and he needed to check it out. So I sent some pictures over and he told me that he didn't like this version. I asked him what he thought and he told me. So I took a different approach to it. He wanted it more like the pictures. Thinner ladder and a little different design. So I cut the 4 tabs I welded to the roof rack and went into plan B. We had planned out a better idea and I took it into action.

Days went by and I removed the tabs. I had placed an order for some cam follower bearings. I'm waiting for those to show up and get this thing "rolling".

Day two on build time.

By doing this bracket on the rack I'm bringing the pivoting point out to the glass frames hinges, which should be pretty much the same rate and less movement.

Now I get the ladder ready. New design with camel trophy looks. Got some 1 inch tubing and drilled .5 inch holes in it for the ladder rungs.

So after some testing for day two I went and painted the ladder knowing it works and I will not be remaking this a third time.

Got home and waited for these to arrive.... Finally!

Now day three. Drill some holes for my last part of this build. Get a ladder mounted and I can be free.....

After making a fancy bracket with the cam follower bearings and some hardware from Dales, I went with some rivnuts for the glass frame.

  • 2 weeks later...

Used the ladder all weekend at the White Rock camping trip, not a single problem. Thanks again Pedram.

I'll need rock sliders next so put me back in queue. Going on my adventure before White Rock Lake took a toll on the running boards. It's about time they come off and something more protective goes on in place.
