Land Rover 110 MoD Service History Results!

Recommended Posts

For a while now, since taking ownership of our 1987 Land Rover 110 Ex-MoD FFR (Ex-Ministry of Defense, Fitted for Radio) I have been trying to get the service history in regards to where the vehicle was stationed and if it was in an interesting operations.

Initially when I made requests to the MoD for information on my truck (Registration 47-KF-59) I would get a canned response that the information was "not yet available for public release" :(

Fast forward 6 months and me bugging them once a month, I finally got a positive response! Rather than answer directly, they simply sent 6 excel spreadsheets with hundreds of vehicles and the service records.

Hopefully you find it an interesteing read.

After some searching here is what I know:

8/24/1987 Vehicle was delivered to MoD

6/21/1988 Transfered to 11th Signals Regiment of the Blandford Camp RSS (Royal School of Signals) - Blandford Camp, UK

- From my preliminary research the RSS pretty much kept the trucks in good condition for use as communications training tools for the new recruits.

11/17/2006 Transfered to the 21st Signals Regiment - Colerne, UK

- Not much detail here.

9/22/2008 Transfer to Defense Support Group - Stirling, UK

- Again not a lot of detail, but DSG was the contractor at the time responsible or all aircraft and heavy equipment overhauls and maintenance.. This may be the time period in which the 110 was sent back to Land Rover under the Tithonus Life Exension Program

2/9/2009 Transfer to 33rd Squadron of the Royal Air Force - REF Benson, UK

-  The 33rd Squadron exclusively operated PUMA HC.2 Helicopters. Unfortunately I do not know (yet?) if any operations were conducted outside the UK where the rover may have been dragged along.

- This transfer was short lived...

11/4/2009 Transfer to SHQ (sector headquarters) RAF Benson - RAF Benson, UK

- At this point it seems the 110 was prety much used as a base operations and communications vehicle.

Finally, the 110 was removed from military service on 8/30/2012 and sat with Withams Specialist Vehicles until I purchased it in 2016.

Also for anyone that has a Ex-Mod truck, if you want I can send you the Merlin files so you can ook up the service history if you are interested.

Unfortunately no maintenance records yet. I am hoping that if I keep pestering they will hand them over.

As far as when it went back to Land Rover under the Life Extension program I think it was one of the last to get overhauled.

The fan shroud is marked with the cambelt being changed 27.04.10 at 95443km - I have about 107,000km on it now.

Which means only one thing... I need to drive it more  :D

In other very late news, but exciting... I found the 110 on google maps street view!

My MoD registration listed on the seatbox is 47-KF-59 and this would have also been the same registration on the number plate.

While looking up the various locations in the U.K. where the 110 was stationed I started finding parking lots with NATO green 110 shaped vehicles.

Naturally I would zoom in to see what kind of decals the vehicles had as I was curious.

I probably scrolled about this image a few times looking at the vehicles and paying no mind to the number plate when i finally saw it.

THAT'S MY TRUCK!!!

I did my due diligence - April 2011 is well within the 110's time at RAF Bension.

I even wrote down all the combinations the registration could have been and looked them up in the Merlin files. None of the other trucks were stationed even close to the area during my trucks time at RAF Benson.

So I feel it is pretty safe to say it is indeed 47-KF-59  B)
