Desertcrawler
Hey - I messed up on the main trip report. First segement start point is BIG PINE not Lone Pine. Gary is making changes to the trip information page as follows: The first group will meet at Big Pine, CA and leave for park at 9:30am from Jeffrey’s Country Kitchen (along 395 in Big Pine). We’ll be gathering up for a group breakfast (for those inclined) at 8am. The address for Jeff’s Country Kitchen is181 S Main St Big Pine, CA 93513 and their phone number is 760-938-2402. I would suggest that you get a hotel in Big Pine (it is a small town, there are three motels—last time we stayed at the Bristlecone Inn) the night before. Bishop, California is 15 miles North, so if you want to get a nicer selection of Hotels you can always stay there as well. Just remember you will need to get up early to meet everyone for breakfast at the diner. Thanks for the catch Rupert!
Desertcrawler
I'm thinking about the trip, and getting access to the prime campsites. Luckily, this thread is in a private "members only" forum -- and shouldn't show up in the public Google searches. Last year, we lost access to a couple cabins because another party spent time in their trip planning for Easter week by reading our post -- leaving a day early to secure the cabin we wanted! Here is what I am thinking right now: For segment 1 -- we will stay at the Hot Springs first nite, second nite we aim for the Boxcar cabin that Linus references. I saw the website -- it looks cool -- now it is a matter of figuring out how to get there! I'm thinking we DONT do Cerro Gordo -- having trouble contacting the mine owner -- and town isn't officially open. May be a lot of snow up there. For the folks new to the run -- I think Lippencott, the Racetrack are pretty cool sites as well. For Segment 2 -- My dream is to get a site at Briggs camp, down below Chicken Rock. We may need to send out an early, fast moving recce group to confirm availability. If that isn't available, we stay down in the valley (maybe at one of the cabins over by Defense mine) , and then get a cabin up high in the trees the next day. Once we move over to Striped Butte -- we've got three to choose from. Stella's is Ok, but I'd like to try that other larger one next door if we can get it. Geologist's would be good too, but not as sheltered for the tent camping and too small for all of us. If we do get Briggs, may want to stay a couple days and use it as our base station since it is so cool...
