@LandRonB do you plan on leading? The Annual Overland Sub-Committee has been tentatively planning 2024's event for Baja for the last few months.

However, if you want to lead it, we are more than happy to cede this to you : ). Otherwise if you'd like us to co-coordinate we can certainly do so.

We are 100% in either way for a Baja trip, have been meaning to get back on that side of the border for "pleasure" instead of "business" : ).

I’d be up for a fall Baja too ❤️❤️

I am going for Sasha style and sleep inside the D2.  I checked out his set up in Moab and copied it for drive to and back from SCARR in Texas and it worked out fine.  I won't have to listen to the zippers gingle, gangle all night long in the wind then also.

    Question for the group

    1. Chili - I was thinking of making of a batch of my cook off chili that won at the AZLRO event this year and bringing it to feed us one night for dinner.  I can make it normal, which is spicy, or tone it done for the group.  If this is something that would interest you, please reply w your preference.
    2. Espresso - I will also be brining my Breville Barista espresso maker because I cannot live without my morning espresso.  You are all welcome to partake - bring some milk if you also want to make a fancy coffee.

I want to go on this trip just for the chili and morning latte

YES...! It can get windy in the lovely Mojave... Sometimes REALLY windy -- like Lutz said -- usually at night. But often times it can be gloriously calm...!

Overall, I like your idea of hunkering down in the back of your truck.

It got so bad a couple years ago, and I thought I had an alternator issue, that we went and spent the night in Vegas. Turns out it was one of their worse wind storms that year, the air was super dusty. Caught up the next morning but had to bail that afternoon due to two bad tires, and I borrowed Sasha’s spare for several miles of track till we got to the pavement. Still want to go finish that section to get caught up.

  4. I'm interested in going, but seeing as I have less than 1 week from when I get out of school till when the trip starts. I likely won't be able to get myself, the truck, or supplies ready in time. I'll see what I can do and make a plan later. But  if anyone has room for an extra person, I'm open to riding with someone!

If I can go, I’ll have room. If you have a ground tent (I actually have a small 2-person you could borrow) and sleeping bag, you could probably run with me.

  5. Had a blast today with Jake, Josh and Shannon, Mark (new to rovering his Rover), and Ted with his son JT.

The two trails had some spicy section but everyone made it through relatively unscathed. Even Marks AWD 2016 LR4 on basically all-seasons made it through everything (more of a testament to his driving!).

We ate lunch at the top of the trail that overlooks Caples Lake and Kirkwood. There were a few other groups on the trail and had some good chats. We can be friends with Toyotas, Jeeps, and motorbikes haha.

We ended the day at Tamarack Lake in Hope Valley, which was really low for some reason. Only I took a quick plunge in the lake to rinse off the trail dust.

Hope to do another trail day soon!

if this didn’t work, I will export the data. I missed the Gaia , do you want to continue recording the track on the first official trail day - for some reason that happens often.

Yea, I need to be reminded to continue if I Pause the recording lol.

But looking at the track, just south of Gap Ranch, you guys bypassed a section that we did, which probably saved you some time, but that one part you guys did in the Rock Garden from Hell wasn't what we did. I remember looking at some satellite imagery in that area and wondering how the heck there's a track there and how did the people who made it get through there. Super remote.

Looking at it on Google Earth, we should have gone the way you guys took, it looks well traveled in comparison. Where the intersection is, we tracked west and you guys tracked north.

All this to say, if we do a trip to this region again, we route for an easier trail through this section, if at all.

  7. So I was trying to compare the NCLR route to ours, and it looks like in the Rock Garden From Hell, NCLR took a slightly different route. Where as we went by two "lakes" (dry lake beds; green line), the NCLR group turned north before we did (cyan and light blue lines). Looking at the contour lines that the light blue line goes through (north bound), was that a steep area? So I am wondering if that's why there was such carnage and a different experience through that area. Of course now it sounds like it's a paved highway from all the rocks that were removed...

The dropped pin are the coords that Paul gave us in the WhatsApp chat.

I'd love to compare the tracks if anyone recorded them...

  8. I threw this question out to Will/Gotrovr a couple days ago...
Do you guys think the newer trucks with the wider tracks (i.e. LR3's, LR4's, L322 & up) were somewhat more compromised in terms of sidewall exposure in those boulder and volcanic rock fields?
    Just curious...
    --Paul

I don’t think so. On our run, besides my LR4, we had my LR3, Nick’s 110 on 37’s with spacers, an 80 Land Cruiser with basically the same set up as Nick, and an LC 60 on 30” KO2’s (but a very narrow track).

I think it’s just the luck of the draw on some of these tracks. We had zero tire issues in the Christmas Valley region, and only one mechanical (blown strut). But then last year in the Mojave, I sideswipe a rock I could see at the edge of the track and blew the sidewall. Just a big oof.

We also encountered the nearly 17 combined miles of volcanic chunkiness at the same time of day, and go super slowed down as well. It was torture lol.

These memories will live on forever.
