AdvRovr
Eastern Sierra Mines & Ghost TownsSeptember 16-18th (small update 08/15: Chad had to step out of running this trip so RedRover (Jared) will be trip leader subject to change.)Ever want to see a ghost town? Or check out an abandoned mine? How about just explore the remote and varied eastern Sierras?Come on, then!Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18 we'll head up to the Eastern Sierras to do some exploring. We'll camp just outside of Yosemite high in the forest, then on Saturday we'll do a tour through Bodie, Aurora (NV), Masonic, and Chemung mines and ghost towns. Some, like Bodie, are well preserved and very interesting from a historical perspective. Others, like Masonic, are nearly reduced to their foundations. Chemung was particularly enjoyable as you can crawl around the site and into several of the buildings. Sunday will be a lazy morning and break camp at your leisure - we'll stick around for a bit and go swimming in one of the lakes nearby, you're welcome to leave as you wish. This is a family-oriented trip that's easy going and would be easily passable by any stock Land Rover. AdvRovr
Unfortunate news, I'll be out on business over that weekend so I can't make it. Rather then change the date again, I'm happy to send all the info and GPS tracks I have to someone else to lead. RedRover
Quick update -- I spent some time reviewing the itinerary this weekend and, based on the campground availability we may be changing things up a little. Initial plan was to arrive south and do the Bodie GPX track heading north but I may flip it and have us camp on Friday night near Honeymoon Flat. Instead of starting in Bodie on Saturday, we would start our off-road trip at Chemung and roll around from north to south where we end up in Bodie last before heading to our final camping destination, which may be either Aspen Campground or possibly one of the Lundy camps (Lundy Canyon CG or Lundy Lake CG) I'm still poring over the details, but expect an update shortly on the latest for this trip, including meeting/caravan points on the way up. Thanks
lithium1330
Cool! Thanks (& to Chad also) for pulling this together! And Honeymoon Flat - sounds romantic. I'll bring candles.
DHappel
Well crap....I've been told I can't go on this trip because I have to go to Flatistan (AKA Florida) with Michele for her family reunion. Something about not seeing them for over 5 years or some such nonsense. Grrrrr.... I'll practice up on my banjo playing and teeth picking for my trip. Florida - a place so upside-down that the further north you go, the more South it gets. Have fun......

Expectation is to be rolling at 6:30AM sharp; don't miss the caravan! We will be monitoring on 146.460 MHz. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. lithium1330
Hey Jared, what's the plan for dinners and breakfast at campsites? Are there fire pit grills at camp, or BYO stove (which I'm perfectly cool with either) or Restaurant/taqueria to eat near by camp?

Welllll....looks like I had the Florida date wrong. I knew it interfered with a trip, but it's the Pismo trip in November, not this one. So that means we'll be going after all! We'll be coming down 99, so we'll plan to meet you at your 8:30 stop at Starbucks. Justin, if you want to run down with us just let me know and we can coordinate. I'll probably roll out of Walnut Grove around 7 and stop for gas along the way, taking 5 to Stockton then cutting over to 99 on 4.

Are there fire pit grills at camp, or BYO stove (which I'm perfectly cool with either) or Restaurant/taqueria to eat near by camp?Hey Chris; we plan on cooking at camp, but more of a 'BYO' style. Happy to feed anyone that walks by and has a bowl/plate, though... Honeymoon Flat, and the backup Robinson Creek are managed campgrounds; they have vault toilets and potable water. I believe there are also firepits. Dogs are welcome on 6' leash. As for restaurants, looks like the Rhino Bar & Grill in nearby Bridgeport gets a thumbs up on Tripadvisor. Also the Burger Barn and the Virginia Creek Settlement restaurant.

RedRover
Questions here: new to the club, Is the times for Friday Itinarary am times? Also is meeting up at the sites Friday night an ok thing? Hey Lauro; Welcome to the club! This will be a good trip for your first time with us. If you're planning on meeting up on Friday night, we'll consider that as we set up camp so we can reserve another spot if necessary. Honeymoon Flat CG is pretty easy to get to from Hwy 395 / Twin Lakes, so it shouldn't be an issue getting to camp unless you leave really late. Do you have an amateur radio license + radio? If so we can monitor 146.460MHz as you're coming in.

lithium1330
Btw, if you have the National Parks pass, you can use that in lieu of the $30 needed through Yosemite.
RedRover
Btw, if you have the National Parks pass, you can use that in lieu of the $30 needed through Yosemite. Thanks for mentioning, I wasn't sure if Yosemite was included. Friday takes us up Hwy 108 which is north of Yosemite (120 goes through it) so we won't require it going east -- however, my current plan of record would have us south enough on Saturday afternoon that we will likely set up camp near where it would be easiest to drive out 120 going home.
