Corral Hollow / Sour Grass Trail
September 26-27th
We are planning a trip to run the Corral Hollow and Sourgrass trails in Alpine & Calaveras Counties. Corral Hollow is 14 miles long. Travel time should be about 4 hours. Running the trail from west to east, the first 90% was doable with just about any rover. The last 10% was a lot harder (not as hard as slickrock). Greg pulled it off in the Bone Stock LR4 with stock tires using land rover's magic traction control. He didn't get any body damage. This is one of the most beautiful trails i've ever seen. There are many primitive campsites with awesome 360* views for miles. The trail can be run either direction and that will be finalized later on. There is an old bear trappers cabin that a nice piece of history to see as well.

Sourgrass trail is located In Camp Connell/Dorrington about 15 miles down HWY 5 from Corral Hollow. It is only 3 miles long and is a fun challenging trail that runs along the Stanislaus River. Travel time would probably be a few hours. I ran the trail in my LR4 with 31" Tires and rods and didn't hit my sliders although they wouldn't hurt, especially if you have a low-clearance vehicle. I would say part of the trail reminded me of slickrock but to a slightly lesser degree. I have only run the first 2 miles and turned around which was 2.5 hours. This is an out-and-back, low-range, slower moving trail.
Having done both shaver and slickrock i will say none of these were that hard. corralll hollow was a cakewalk until the last mile. there is a really cool bear trappers cabin that people are free to use as long as they replenish what the take. essentially you could drive to the bear cabin and spend the night. then in the morning, turn left for more 4x4 fun, or turn right and go back out the way you came. there are a few stream crossings but nothing a stock rover wouldn't eat for breakfast.
I would like to invite everyone who participates to our place for a BBQ/relaxation fest afterwards. Sourgrass trail is located at the back of the neighborhood where our cabin in. My family is truly blessed to have a place up here and the trails are wonderful. There are so many, many more, i hope this will be the first of several trips.
