(please modify in your own words):

Dear Sue,

Thank you for working with the Forest Service team and putting together the Stanislaus DEIS Document.

As we are currently reviewing the Stanislaus DEIS Comment document, we are noticing the document has been difficult to read and hard to comprehend. We would like to request an extension for the comment period to ensure we have proper time to properly review the document.

Thank you,

Thanks Gui for this udpate, who to contact, and sample letter.

I just emailed mine w/subject "Request Stanislaus DEIS Comment extension" to Sue. Took less than 1 min.

I like email, you can tell if has been received (via return receipt) or returned (e.g. if I typed the wrong email address).

Thanks!

Hi gang, just got this note back from Sue... hmmmmmm but definitely worth the try

Dear Gui and Jonna,

I have recently received a request from you to extend the public comment period for the Stanislaus NF’s Motorized Travel Management DEIS.

I have met with staff and given your request serious consideration. I am not going to grant an extension because of the following reasons:

The DEIS was available a full week prior to being announced in the Federal Register. The Forest did this early release to provide additional time to review the comprehensive DEIS. Release of the DEIS prior to Federal Register gave folks an additional 7 days to review the material. Most special interest groups received the documents in this advanced mailing.

The information was sent out in hard copy and CD format to over 1,300 individuals, organizations, tribes, and agencies. The information on the CD contained all the information necessary to make substantive comments, including specialist reports, supporting documents, map products (including QUAD maps at a smaller scale for easier downloading and printing). Providing all the information up front and not having to have to request the information and wait for it to be mailed resulted in more time available for review.

The website was down for approximately 5 days. The website was not the only source of information available for this project. Any requests for information such as mailing a CD or hard copy were processed and mailed same day.

Some ideas on how to review and comment on the document are:

Focus on an area of concern or an area you can support;

If you are an organization, divide up the response areas and focus on one forest(those of you that are responding to multiple forests) or on certain parts of the forest, such as ranger districts or areas on ranger districts;

Focus on one part of the proposed action, e.g. cross country travel prohibited, parking one vehicle length, additions to the system, changes to the existing transportation system, season of use, wheeled over snow.

It will not be the number of times I hear the concern or support for an action that will be critical for my decision, but rather the specific comments provided in your own words.

I want to thank you for your continued involvement. Implementation of this decision will be a key to our success in managing a road and trail system on the Stanislaus NF. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Sue Warren at swarren@fs.fed.us, with subject line: Information Request.

Sincerely,
