Desertcrawler
Turns out the wife will be out of town and I've got the kids who get Friday off from school. I'm thinking about breaking out the tent trailer for the first time in 2009 and overnighting the night of the 6th and the night of the 7th. Have the kids bring their bikes, a friend from school maybe, and turn it into a regular campout. Anybody else down for a little camping action to test out your gear before the Death Valley run over Easter? I realize the camping isn't the best there, but it is close to town and might be fun... esteban
Maybe, if I can get out of work. Time will tell. Which campsite?
Desertcrawler
I'm assuming the new section won't be open yet. Cedar camp is more like real camping, but the main area up by the obstacle course is more convenient and could sit and watch the Obstacle Course. Depends, I suppose, on how many feel like the overnight. Right now, I am leaning towards Cedar.
Disco2Guy
I may not make it to the Feb. MORG. Melinda's b-day is on the 6th, so it may depend if she has work Saturday morning or not.
GriffSC
interesting. will check the schedule. might be a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast, chuck. while it's been dry, things are supposed to change in the coming week. DrewW
So I am new to the group and was looking at making the 2/7 trip to Hollister [won't be camping out]. I was wondering about this group - I have a stock 2006 LR3 and have gone off-roading maybe a dozen times (4 at Hollister). There are a lot of LR gurus in the group, any non-supersized LRs? Also, my 6 yr old son usually has a good time, but do many folks bring kids? I thought everyone was to meet somewhere at a set time, but I admit I cannot seem to find that thread anymore and the calendar is not updated. Can anyone either direct me to the thread or fill me in? Thanks. WWDLRD? ("What Would David Lee Roth Do?")Drew
GriffSC
you're perfectly good in your LR3. most of us don't have super-sized rigs and we are in it for fun first and foremost. great group of easy-going folks. i usually bring my 5 and 3 year old boys. folks usually meet in the parking lot past on the right past the Hollister check-in at 10am, but people are welcome to get there as early as they want, even wheel a bit, before meeting up. we all use CB channel 7 and FRS same. Desertcrawler
There is a place called the Obstacle Course that everyone usually heads to right after the 10am start -- so latecomers can join up with the group there.
esteban
I'll be there for the MORG, camping though, we'll see. Can I get there after dark on friday night?
Desertcrawler
I will post up the camping location, depending on weather. I am thinking about the place right above the obstacle course as a good place to put my trailer -- unless we have lots of tent campers then I would say Cedar would be better. Disco2Guy
I'll be there for the MORG, camping though, we'll see. Can I get there after dark on friday night? Yes you can. I had the same question coming home from the Mojave Road. I was told there are rangers at the station until ~9pm. As long as they're on duty you can pay the $10 camping fee and drive to the campground.

Desertcrawler
Sweet, I might get there around 6ish.... What we will probably want to do, once things get closer, is post up the combination code for the gate for anyone who gets there after the ranger station closes. As it looks like some folks may be joining us, I will try and get there early enough to reserve a nice large site at Cedar Camp. THat is the campsite that is off to the left as soon as you drive in past the schoolhouse. If you are bringing kids -- make sure and warn em about the poison oak! Disco2Guy
Luis, if you're back here by the end of Feb. you should join the Shaver Lake trip. Man, I camped out by myself last month and now everyone is camping this time, and I may not even make it:(
Jantiz
How has the LR3 been doing in the cold? Any more problems? I was getting a lot of transmission faults and the truck seemed to be low on cranking power in the cold mornings. It also started not letting me take the key out of the ignition after turning it off, acting identical to when you turn it off in gear. I figured the 2 things were probably connected somehow. Sure enough, I took it in to the local dealer here and they found the battery to be bad and the transmission shifter bad as well, which was causing the faults plus not letting me take out the key since the sensors thought the truck was still in gear when it was in Park. Changed out both and so far, it's perfect! Even in the mornings with single digits, runs like a dream.
