PaulD
[Link to Part I: Hollister to King City the FUN Way] Backing up a little, the New Idria Mine site was ghostly. More information on the history of the area can be found here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Idria,_California So, again, after climbing West up Clear Creek Road, we thought it might be time for a view and snack break:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_6.jpgLooking Southwest:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_7.jpgAnd West:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_8.jpgLutz checking on things...http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_9.jpgThe area is hilly and has been tightly monitored by the BLM folks due to the natural deposits of asbestos. We didn't seem to be kicking up much dust thankfully. The road was quite "cushy."http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_10.jpgI let Lutzi lead at this point... this narrower trail in the background is where the four of our rigs emerged after last year's foray into the heart of the area:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_11.jpgWe were still on a winding dirt road for the next 5 miles or so:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_13.jpgJust to make it official:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/ClearCreek_12.jpg We finally hit pavement at Cienega Road and after 20 miles, joined up with HWY 25. Then a few more miles at 70 MPH to the turn off to King City. Topped a little fuel there and said our good-byes... Or so we thought:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/Paso_1.jpg(Above) What's this??? Lutzi's water pump decided to shear its shaft just as we were entering Paso Robles City limits. He called me on the radio and I flipped a bitch, mainly to chronicle the event. (Below) So she ended going home down the 101 the way she went UP the 101: on the bed of a trailer. Good thing Tammy was available to do the hauling:http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/padysol/Paso_2.jpg And now recent word of Luti's new ride (a 2004 d2), and it's all good!::bigsmile:: See ya soon, Paul
TomOwen
Great write up Paul! Thoroughly enjoyed... Except the water pump part, but the '02D2 part makes it better...
