Brief Description: Scenic trail that climbs to 10,000 feet at Thompson Lake; be prepared for cold nights. Will pass several lakes (fishing anyone?).

Over ninety percent of this 30-mile trail is slow-speed rock crawling. The most difficult part of the trail is Thompson Hill. Many other challenges await.

Be prepared for breakdowns, and because help is a long way off (both medical and mechical help), we need to be extra careful on the trail (and parts/tools to bring during pre-planning) needed. Let's take our time (we have 4 days to spend on the trail). The trail can also be driven from the North starting at White Bark Vista, or South to North. We will be running this trail from South to North (see Maps 1 to 3 below).

FYI: we have a "Parts Pick-up and BBQ Meet/Greet" with Specialized Parts Planet on Sat Aug 14, 9-3pm (wknd before our Dusy Trip).

All NCLR members are welcomed. Thought this would be a good opportunity for us to pick-up spare parts we may need on the Dusy trip: http://nclrclub.org/forum/showthread.php?996-Members-Gauging-Interest-Specialized-Parts-Planet&p=12198#post12198

Post up if you are attending the Dusy and can attend this BBQ Meet/Greet, or parts we may need to pick-up for the trip!

So we have

2 DIs: Will, and Max

2 RRCs: Ron, Nathan

1 DII Lutz

1 Series Truck

- Need to start planning by identifying: 1) parts/fluids that ea should carry, 2) large common parts that one or two vehicle should atleast carry (e.g. spare differential parts), 3) common/interchange able parts

Let me start:

Pic 1 - I ordered new high pressure power steering line, low pressure and return line just in case. Steering will take a lot of abuse.

Pic 2 - My front driveshaft is HD Tom Woods. Rear is stock. Ordered a pair of replacement u-joints. May not be a bad idea to get spare rear drive-shaft. I have original front drive-shaft as spare.

Pic 3 - Tie-rods and steering rod, and the weak-links are the tie-rod by design. I am bringining my own spare tie-rod ends (1 RH and 1 LH tread)

Pic 4 - Spare new water pump, Right Stuff gasket maker, and spanner to remove the viscous fan/belt spindle. I just installed new belts and hoses. Tossed them away due to bad cracking conditions. May not be a bad idea to bring spare houses and belts.

Pic 5 - Current spares re-visited: coolant expansion tank, spare t-stat, spare fuel pump, and O2 sensors (in case ones in my truck get damaged on the trail). High suggested that ea carry an extra Air Filter. After the running the Rubicon Trial last year, my air filter was very dirty and running rough. Replaced it and continued to cruise back home on the freeway - much smoother and better drive back.

Pic 6 - Other current spare parts: ignition wires, spark plugs, dist cap and rotor, ignition coil, starter, and alternator.

Pic 7 - Misc small parts: spare AIC, relays, bulbs, exhaust gasket and nuts/bots, and spare wheel nuts. May not be a bad idea to bring spare head light bulbs/unit.

Pic 8 - Other misc small parts: rubber exhaust hanger. Mine got damaged last year and instatted a new one during the trip. Figured would be a bad idea to have another spare for this trip. Also extra driveshaft nuts and bolts.

Pic 9 - Ea should bring suff supplies of fluids: change of oil & filter; brake, steering, gear and automatic transmission to top off, and coolant. May want to think about extra fluids we may need to bring.

Pic 10 - I carry this all the time; might as well make sure to bring jumpers.

No pictures. Misc repair kits I can bring: muffler repair tape, JB Weld, Radiator repair, and ARB tire replace kit.

I have a spare RRC LWB rear prop shaft if you need to borrow one for use as a spare.

Thanks for the offer Steven; I will ask if Nathan can use it since he runs a LWB; I run a SWB. Appreciate the offer.

I reshaped the rear diff guard on my RRC; took a beating on the Rubicon last year. Well worth having it. Just a couple of hammmering here and there, fresh paint and good as new.

I also changed the diff oil both in the front and rear; looks good; no shavings or pcs of metal. Lockers perform as expected.

If Nathan agrees, we will be closing up the registration.

With this said, let's "Party Like a Rock Star" on the Dusy; turn it up (of course treading lightly on the trail):

Carl from Specialized Parts Planet confirmed Aug 14 for BBQ/Parts Pick-up for NCLR members.

I asked Carl if he has rear driveshaft and B&W TC for my spares; he has RRCs on the lot and have them for me; gave me 50% on the parts. $50 for the rear drive-shaft vs $100, and $100 for the TC vs Paying $200. Sweet!

Let me know if you guys need any other parts, or if you can join for BBQ/parts pick-up @ Parts Planet in Rancho Cordova.

C yah!

Sweet!

Now we just need to schedule a shake down perhaps during the August MORG.

A little TLC from Frank Cerrone and Shrek is now good to go

Radiator cleaning

Thermostat

Expansion Tank

Engine Mounts

Couple of other things

Just need to find the time to get back up to RWC and pick Shrek up

If anyone needs a spare 3rd I have them. off my parts d2. as well as any other STOCK spares you need just let me know and i will bring them to morg or drop them off at a house.

Thanks Colin for the offer; will may take you up on that. We ended up needed a 3rd last year @ the Rubicon.

At this point, I am thinking the attendees of this trip (anyone else welcomed to join us) attend the Aug 7 MORG for final meet before the Dusy Trip on the Aug 18; it's optional. I will be dropping off my RRC for inspection and any fixing needed on it next week and will be ready for a shake down drive.

1) Extra air filter. Should see my air filter after the Rubicon trip last year. Very dirty/covered with dust. After the group got out and stopped at the nearest gasoline station (running rough towards the last day), I filled up and while at it, replaced the air filter. Seems to have cured the sluggishness!

2) Supplies of wag bags.

3) Bring your Trasharoo Bag if you have one. Good way to keep your trash outside the vehicle including wag bags.

See attached. I have the usr version as well if you need it.

Trail should be mark (will follow Nathan's lead); gps can help to make sure we stay on track.

Hi Ron,

For some reason I can't open the file?

Due to the lack of funds I have no CB but I have a FRS hope this does not screw you up.

I will bring lots of firewood although wood can be found on the trail if you look hard

I have a feeling it may still be cold even in mid Aug @ night so bring you thermals everyone.

I am kinda taking it day by day after the 1st couple of nights as to where we camp but definately we will be cammping @ Voyager (foot of Chicken Rock) Wednesday and Thursday just past the top of Thompson Hill.

Last year we did this in 3 days 3 nights so we will have plenty of time this year to enjoy.

No worries on the file; I will print the map and the gps markers/way points.

I have a handheld CB you can use. Bring the FRS anyways. I will have both FRS and CB. Since we will be close, should be fine for trail use.

Yes, suspect will be cold also so go for all of us to be prepared.

Take it day by day; between the six of us in the group, one or the other can chime in when they can and add details/other things to consider/remember. All things will come together eventually.

And with the extra time hopefully we will have time to go fishing. I am bring a bring, fish cleaning knice and hope to catch some e.g. trout for dinner. Cant' wait.
