  1. It is literally my FAVORITE color of all the early Range Rovers.  Tuscan Blue in person is very eye-catching.  Also like the Bahama Gold color from the same period.

Doug Lawyer from AZLRO *had* a repaint on a 90's RRC in Tuscan Blue (or something very very similar) but I believe it got into a bit of an accident.  I don't know if he still has it.

Also, Arizona isn't exactly around the corner for a quick peek...

  2. Refreshed the rear suspension on my L322 this weekend. I installed new lower wishbone bushes, stabilizer bar linkages, trailing links and upper and lower rose joints. The lower rose joints were toast which explained the nasty screeching noises I’ve had since Hollister three weeks ago.

Old lower rose joint. Note the crud I found inside. There was also significant play in both of these joints.

Do you think the crud is chewed up rubber or is it something else?

  3. Was heading to the Shaver Lake area this morning. Passed Andrew on 101 near Gilroy on his way to Hollister. About 5 miles past Casa De Fruta my tensioner pulley went bye bye. I noticed because my battery warning light came on (alternator wasn’t spinning) and was quickly followed by my temp maxing out. I pulled over to tiny shoulder and immediately noticed steam coming from under the hood. After popping the hood, it was clear what the issue was. Luckily I had another pulley assembly on me and was able to replace it. It was a relatively quick and easy fix, about 20 minutes, and there doesn’t seem to be any collateral damage. Almost ruined the weekend. I’m definitely going to replace the spare with another spare.

I recall one of our Baja trips this happened to someone's D2... while they didn't have the spare part, someone had a DI tensioner (or a different-year/engine D2 tensioner, can't recall) and they hobbled the parts together to make it work.  I was impressed at the level of ingenuity displayed; some of that may have had to do with how dark it was getting; no one likes driving in Baja at night so everyone worked quickly.

The belt didn't sit correctly on the tensioner (about 15% of it was sitting off the pulley due to the part not being designed for it), but hey, it was enough to get through the trip.

Hearing that another one bit the dust, this certainly seems like a key part to keep in the spares bin for a Disco.

  4. Brake pad sensor lit up on dashboard - funny I just changed the pads recently ... turns out the sensor wire had chaffed and was intermittently shorting out. Lucky I had a spare one in the garage - remove wheel, fender liner rivets, disconnect old one inside liner , thread new one in - fixed !

Wow - any idea what it was rubbing against and was there some clip that was supposed to hold it in place?

  5. I did take a minute to do the tire carrier flip which seems to work out well and should be enough space for when I ever go to a 35" tire.

Bummer on the gremlins... seems about right though, since in all of the time I've owned RedRover I think there has always been at least one electrical thing 'going on' at any time.

Sometimes they just appear and disappear just as fast.  Spent time and $$$ to clean all of the grounding points which helped stop some of the odd 'cross-traffic' electrical things that would happen (power mirror would drive the door locks, etc.) but it's still not perfect.

The tire carrier flip must be a well-known trick since you called it "The Tire Carrier Flip"...

  6. Got the front of the P38 put back together tonight. I had to remove the front carpet because of a heater core leak that soaked the passenger side footwell. The leak was slow and I think it had been going for a while because the coolant that squeezed out of the carpet was real thick like warm maple syrup. Took hours to get it out of the carpet and pad and three days for it to dry. To get the carpet out the center consol, seats, door sills, kick panels and a few other things had to come out. Took me about 3 1/2 hours to put it all back together. Frustratingly, I did end up with two extra screws. And for the life of me can't figure out where they go.

Congratulations on the cleanup.  I've heard many horrors of the leaking/cracked heater core -- are the replacements OEM or has someone improved the design to hopefully prevent it from happening again?

  7. Last weekend I pulled off all my armor, cleaned and painted it, and re-installed.  Also cleaned up some surface rust that was starting to show up on suspension/chassis components from Soda Lake.  And replaced the compressor air valve block in an effort to stop my tank from bleeding down.  A vain effort it would seem.

    Hi Don,

If the valve isn't the source of the leak, what else could it be?

  8. I did a permanent install under the passenger seat, I to went with the twin compressor. I thought about getting the tank but didn't like the size and shape so have ideas in the future to custom make my own tank. I was told I could possibly run my impact on my setup with the tank but I'm not sure how that will work.

I would also be curious how impact tools work.  The twin compressor in a box is also sold to work with impact wrenches and the like but I haven't actually tested it.  I don't have any preconceptions it will do a great job but might be passable when needed.

  9. Not to thrilled with how little air my power tank holds and how often I need to go fill it so I decided to install a ARB compressor in my Landy to make things easier. So far this unit has worked great. Did 8 tires, 4 32's and 4 33's with ease without heating up or shutting down. Now I can help air people up on trails without having to worry about not having enough air or my tank freezing over. Ever on the ropes about getting on board air I recommend it.

Loves me some ARB compressor (I bought the Twin with tank.)  Which one did you go with and did you do a permanent installation or a mobile install?

The ARB-in-a-box is a nice way to share the love.  I can hand over the entire box and anyone can air up without driving over to me.

Admittedly, the two Viairs Don installed in his truck look sweet...

  10. Spent the early AM yesterday installing new headlamps from JW Speaker.  I got a 2 pack of them in via Amazon Prime.  Here is the model:

    End result:

Afterward, I finally had a chance to re-attach the aluminum trim that holds down the carpets.  It took forever for the rubber pads and carpets to dry out from the deep water crossing on the Mojave trip (the constant rain and humidity for the past two weeks has not helped.). I knocked down any sharp nicks or gouges in the metal and replaced all of the screws with new 1.0" stainless ones.

Did a nice 'sprucing-up' of the interior;  wiped down as much dust as I could get to and generally vacuumed up the French fries and Pringles from various trips that had made their way past the Range Rover classic seat controls...

Last thing I needed to refresh was the rear ladder.  The roller bearing assemblies got destroyed by the endless rain we've had the past couple of weeks, so I rehabilitated those -- while at it, I decided to remove the roller frame assembly from the rear tailgate to clean out the detritus that had built up over the years (mainly pine needles and mud.)

I got through the first 3 bolts that attached using rivnuts -- the final (of course) pulled the rivnut out with the bolt, so I created a new project while working on another.

Three bolts are still pretty good, so I put it back together until I can figure out this whole rivnut thing.
