WHY JOIN CORVA?

I know a lot of you are already members of other groups like Blue Ribbon, Cal4wheel, NORA, etc. The majority here already puts lots of hours on trail cleanups and efforts to keep trails open. Still, a lot of people are not aware of CORVA, a strong, and fully volunteered organization focusing on enjoying the outdoors and trails and keeping our trails open. Jeff and the CC Jeepers put together an event a few weeks back with Amy from Corva, which was a great eye opener for many on what is being done by them to counter the attacks and risks of closure.

They have been working hard together and have a paid legal advisor that has been putting together a strong comments document to counter the proposed plan and closure DEIS. I know times are tough for everyone, but they are urging for all support, more people joining the association, and donations.

Even if you are unable to join CORVA at this time, please do browse through their site, and read the recent articles, specially the April 2009 magazine (see page 14 for a great example) that can be downloaded. It shows explicitly a lot of what has been happening behind the curtains, and what can be done to counter.

YOUR COMMENTS ARE NEEDED:

One thing to remember is that the Stanislaus comments period was extended because of people like us calling and requesting more valuable time to provide input. Remember to provide your input and make it worth it. Comments like you and your family have been going to trail X for several years, etc is great, but they need very specific comments related to what is in the DEIS that was unreasonable, biased or that have very debatable “facts†and can be argued. A way to do it is to browse through the DRAFT DEIS docs and use key words.

Amy mentioned an example where the DRAFT said something about “bears†and how the argument was that offroaders are accessing areas that are impacting the bear population growth, when in reality the black bear population has been thriving and growing exponentially. Other example of flaws were areas of the “studies†and that were performed in logging roads and in reality are irrelevant to trails we access.

Pick keywords, browse through the doc and you can start finding areas that are very “gray†and need to be added to the comments.

Thank you again for your continued support!
