Gauging Interest: 3rd Annual NCLR Return to Shaver Lake Summer Run

Recommended Posts

Howdie Folks,

Now that I've taken the Hawaii vacation I promised my wife (exchange for my RRC build-up), and Shaver Lake Snow run past us, I am ready to plan for the Return to Shaver Lake Summer Run (minus the snow :D) in July 2009.

I contacted Treadlightly and no plans for a clean-up/PR Opportunity at this point. Figured, can't wait for that, and just scheduled this run as planned and hit some fun granite rock trails on Bald Mtn.

Camping Friday and Saturday nite; Bald Mtn trail run Saturday. Optional activity Sunday - see below.

This year if time permits I'd like to spend an optional Sunday a.m. hike up Dusy Ershim Trail: http://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=XFT003-065; Park our truck at the north entrance of this trail, take our backpacks and hike up several miles, lunch on the trail and back. Bring Mosquito Spray for sure and plenty of water!

Also if I don't put this out now and with a busy July ahead of us, folks might not find time fo this trip.

I enjoy returning to Shaver Lake and Bald Mtn trail both winters and summer runs, and certainly summer is better if you like to take a swim, soak up the sun and really shoot for making to the top of Bald Mtn and check out the fantastic panoramic view of the Sierras.

With this said, I am looking at the 1st or 2nd wknd after 4th of July (1-12 or 17-19) or perhaps give more people options on the wknd of July 24-26. On that wknd, their the Jeep Jamboree to the Rubicon Trail Tony is planning if you like extreme, and the SCLR's Rover Rendezvous from Easy to Extreme. Bald Mtn is med difficult.

Here's last year's trip report; read the vehicle req and trip details: http://nclrclub.org/forum/showthread.php?t=416

Here's my CT110 on the trail.

Post your questions and if you are interested, let me know. After which, I will submit the trip request and post the official trip details/sheet once I get enough interest.

Cheers!

Once again, I need confirmed dates. It'd be great to see the trail not covered in snow.......

You will be impressed with the trail and view at the top less the snow! :D

Hey Ron, how about checking out some of the other trails in the area this year? I remember one guy we talked to last year that told us about some other trails further up the road. I will try to find out which ones he was referencing.

That sounds interesting; Besides Bald Mtn, there are other trails in Shaver Lake. One I've be interested in checking-out Swamp Lake - a few miles past the turn off to Bald Mtn. It's one level more difficult than Bald Mtn trail. I read in one of my trail guides - at least one locker is highly recommend or have a winch!

Here's one of the reviews on the web re: Swamp Lake: http://4x4trailhunters.com/trails/trail.php?id=32

Let me know if interested.

Here are some trail descriptions Ron. I will look for more info on them individually.

West, Strawberry are stock-friendly but sliders are always recommended. rated about a 4/10

Red Lake requires at least sliders; rear locker and armor are recommended. rated 6-7/10

Mirror and Coyote requies at least 3" lift, 33s and one locker and armor. Two lockers and a winch are recommended. rated 8-9/10.

Brewer Lake is an easy stock trail with one tricky spot. rated 4/10.

Swamp Lake is reported to be tougher than Dusy but I haven't been on all of it as yet. rated 9-10/10 (this is a minimum 2-day trail)

Pics from another forum... Looks like lots of fun!

I will look into also, and we work on together to pick the trail.

We can use Return to Shaver Lake Summer Run as the platform - then we check out different trails each time or following year.

Makes it interesting, and the "element of surprise". I like it.

OK, will chime in with more details and dates soon!
