2009 Return to Shaver Lake Snow Run

Recommended Posts

Well, back by popular demand - planning in progress for our return to Shaver Lake Snow Run in 2009.

Looking at Feb or March time frame next year (last year we went mid Feb and the weather was perfect (except the long story on "stuckfest")).

What we learned from last year and need to improve on are:

1) need to make the group/truck size more manageable,

2) prepare for the worst and to camp overnight,

3) proper gears e.g. snow tire chains, winch,

4) driving technique in the snow, understanding the snow conditions and I am sure there are others I am forgetting... More details later.

With that said:

Initial plan is to limit truck size to 8 with priority for folks who went last year. Doesn't mean you can't truck pool - in fact be great to see 2-3 people in a vehicle granted you have room. Especially with the price of gas and if you don't want to take your truck.

Prepare to camp overnight in the snow. We can head out to Shaver Lake on Friday, camp near or on the snow trail at night, wheel early in the morning, practise our driving techniques and recovery, optional camping Sat night and then head back home Sunday.

Need to plan our equipment and gears: we all don't need to bring pull-pals just one, all to bring snow chains or proper tires, winch with every other vehicle, etc... More on this.

Main objectives of this trip: snow driving technique, recovery practise, camping/preparedness in cold weather, and let's have fun (bring lots of firewood) in the snow.

PM if interested and want to return, or going for the first time and very interested.

Here's the video teaser that Keptin and JP made from last year:http://www.kep1.com/images/Site%20Media/Videos/Shaver%20Lake%202008.divx

Leigh,

Oregon dismal swap repeat! :D

Sorry you had the breakdown last year but that's over now and glad you can make this one. Would be great to have you on this trip.

Always appreciate your cool, and collective thinking when it comes to doing recovery and getting unstuck safely.

I'm interested, but it's a bit early for me to confirm until I figure out test dates next quarter. I'm debating on whether I want to drive myself or tag along and film a bit...I realize that last year's footage was never released to the public, I still have 4GB of it on my hard drive.

Here's a low res youtube version of the above video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv5FdqpXsGE

Ron, you might want to post this link up top too.

Hey Josh,

Would be great to have you join again; Return to Shaver Lake Snow Run will not be the same w/o you.

And if you don't have time to edit the 4 gig of data, send me the DVD disk; there are a few here e.g. Jim aka MrVideo, Brenton, etc... that can do the editting work when their time permits and make a nice NCLR DVD out of it (of course filming credits will be yours/JP).

Anyways, look forward to seeing you on this return trip and whether w/your Rover or do filming, up to you!

Cheers!

Great Barron, hope you can make it. Are your running tires that came original equip on your LR3 when new, or have up graded to more aggressive tires e.g Nitto Grapplers, BFG ATs.

There were two guys on LR3s here that went to Shaver Lake Snow Run last year: Enrique (Discochef) and Dave (Sasquatch).

Both can add to this/chine in.

Enrique was running on stock tires - kept him getting struck.

Dave was running Nitto Tera Grapplers; I believe faired better on the snow for the most part despite "suspension failure"; you might want to talk to Dave on how he was able to reset this in case you run into during the snow run.

Also understand LR3s have very tight clearance for snow chains so check for proper fitment based on your tire size (hopefully Enrique, Dave and others will chime in).

And with or without chains, there was about 100 yards of tore up path that most everyone got stuck on our way back. I think we would have made it thru if the "bunch of young locals" on thier pick=up trucks didn't tear up our patch back home.

I'd say talk to one the LR3 guys re: recommended tires, and have snow chains and recovery gear ready - you will be fine; we can pull you out if you get stuck.

Barron,

If you can, get a hold of a set of AT's of some sort. The stock HP's are terrible for snow. I had Nitto's and Enrique had stockers. We both struggled at various times - as did EVERY vehicle with every type of tire. Enrique lost a bead at the beginning. Airing down will absolutely help out in the traction department. I have taller sidewalls than stock and was able to air down to 16psi. Gained a little advantage over stock. Don't be scared if you show up with stockers. The LR3 works very well in complete stock form and we all have winches and straps to get you out! :D

This helps explain; been trying to get a hold of Casey but no response; sounds like he is servicing our country and might have put the company on hold. So no check (pay for membership) to replace the missing check, and no product to offer for our annual. I will try again just want to give everyone a heads up!
