Trip Report: Arnold/Bear Valley

Recommended Posts

Last Wednesday we embarked on a day of adventure. The gang consisted of myself, my wife, Enrique his friend/navigator Dan, in Enrique's LR3 and he also invited his friend Raz and his sister/navigator in his 2013 FJ. We met where hwy 4 met I-5 in Stockton and caravaned up. The trailhead was right before Bear Valley ski resort entrance so it was pretty easy to find but it comes up quick.

The trail was pretty easy; a slight incline with some small to medium sized rocks.

The trail eventualy opened up to a meadow of weeds that looked like someone had gone through with a truck full of Round-Up

The whole trail was littered with beautiful views and perfect trees.

We needed some help with directions

<a href="http://s33.photobucket.com/user/barron32/media/IMG_2343.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/barron32/IMG_2343.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_2343.jpg"/></a>

At one point there was a stump in the middle of the trail. part of it was carved out like an "L" for trucks to get through, on the other side was a large fallen tree. I went threw it but a root was sticking out that was highly polished from tires. my rear end kicked out and kissed the tree on the other side. luckily it was the plastic on the rear bumper and left a mark but no damage. There was some previous trail carnage left over from other people like a reflector (on the tree) and a mud flap. Raz in his FJ was next. He didnt have the clearence I did and he bottomed out his side step and bent it a little. Enrique got through with no problems.

I decided not to take point anymore and it payed off. Enrique was calling out all kinds of obstacles over the radio.

We than came accross Bear Trap Hut. A U.S. Forest Service cabin.

<a href="http://s33.photobucket.com/user/barron32/media/IMG_2358.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/barron32/IMG_2358.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_2358.jpg"/></a>

It was so cool exploring this cabin set up for weary horse travelers. or anyone for that matter.

It even came with a bottle of Tequila

The Outhouse

<a href="http://s33.photobucket.com/user/barron32/media/IMG_2368.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/barron32/IMG_2368.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_2368.jpg"/></a>

After that the trail turned into a dirt road and we headed home. The trip was a lot of fun for a day. It was new and exciting. It was very easy but not knowing what was beyond the next turn was fun. This might be a fun snow run. There are a lot more trails going all over up there. Maybe we can plan a overnight trip and explore them all sometime.
