OFFICIAL - Mojave Road 2013

Recommended Posts

Trip request form has been submitted! The Special Use Permit is filled out, I'm just waiting for the check to arrive from Jen and everything will be sent to the NPS.

The date is set for September 12-15, 2013. NCLR flags will be ready in time for this trip, and I ask that everyone has one attached to their truck. Please have a way to attach the flag in time for the trip. Details on the flags will be posted in another thread.

Is anyone interested in camping Thursday night on the trail vs. staying at the Avi Casino?

We could get an idea of everyone's arrival time, meet at the Avi and head out to the trail Thursday evening. I'll be arriving Wednesday and will find the trailhead and a campsite a few miles in.

Also, if you are a HAM, please post your call sign. I'll note it in the trip sheet for everyone.

Interested:

Brenton Trip/Trail Leader (KD2RVR) - Camp on first night- D2, heavily modified, solo

Rupert - 2005 LR3 HSE ARB bumper, AT tires, winch, sliders. RTT Trailer allowed? driver only

Mike McStateOf (KI6LQI) - Camp on first night - 1988 SWB with a few things, +1

To bad this is the same weekend of the rubicon trip.

Yeah, I was going to mention that in the Rubicon thread, but figured if that's the date that works for you so be it. This might be the first time we've had 2 big trips happening at the same time.

  • 2 weeks later...
Today I received an email with the approved Special Use Permit attached. A hard copy is being sent to me as well, so we are all good to go! I will post the coordinates of our planned campsites for each night later today/tonight.

Brenton,

If we are camping on trail night one (and then ahead of schedule a little) and we could camp just AFTER Soda Lake on Sat night that might be cool to cross the playa in the late day.

We would like to camp Thursday night rather than stay at the casino.

Unsure of arrival time. Let us know the departure time from Avi Casino for the first night's camp and we'll be there.

I have a smaller orange NCLR flag (12.x9). Is that adequate or do I need the new larger one?

Ham Radio: K0DTJ = will have 7 MHz SSB (long range) and 144/440 MHz FM plus other assorted goodies. I assume primary trail and talk-in frequency is 146.46 MHz.

I still havent decided on driving from Las Vegas to Avi Casino OR from BA to Avi Casino. Is the meeting place still the Avi Casino Fri AM?

Since I can't find a co-driver, how about a relief driver for a few hrs on the Interstate to the jump off point?

So far the consensus is to camp on the trail Thursday night. If anyone has a rough idea of their eta on Thursday, we can start to arrange a meeting time at the Avi. I can be at the Avi anytime on Thursday.

I will most likely, Rupert. Still trying to figure out my plan, but no reason I couldn't meet up with you. I think I can leave almost anytime Thursday.

Be careful Rupert, that Outback is fast in the corners and hard to follow!

Is this the address to the meet up place?

10000 Aha Macav Pkwy, Laughlin, NV, 89028, US

If so, according to google Maps, is about 8hrs from the bay area not taking in to consideration breaks or stops. I plan to take thursday off and leave around 6 or 7am and be there before 5. If I need to be there earlier, i can leave earlier too. If someone wants to caravan over we can meet up along the way.

That is correct. I'm creating the trip sheet right now, but here's a quick rundown of how I see this working.

Thursday, arrive at the Avi Casino, plan to leave for the trail by 5pm.

Arrive at camp by 7pm 35° 5'28.68"N 115° 0'2.99"W (sunset is 6:50)

Friday, leave camp by 9am

Visit Ft. Piute, the School Bus, Penny Can, Rock Spring or Government Holes, Bert Smith House

Camp at Mid Hills Campground

Saturday, leave Mid Hills by 9am

Visit the Mailbox & Frog Shrine, Lava Tubes, Traveler's monument

Camp at The Granites

Sunday, leave The Granites by 9am

Visit the Railroad Bridge, head back to the Bay Area

I'll probably leave about the same time, we can meetup at the rest stop on I5 south of the 580. I think Griff wants to caravan too, we can meet him at the Arco at Peasoup Andersen exit.

See you at White Rock we can discuss it further.
