What: Come spend a Long weekend camping and wheeling up in the Lassen National Forest in the High Lakes OHV area!

Vehicles: Stock trucks should do fine as the Forest Service has filled in the tougher sections with gravel to get tucks back in to maintain the area.

(Note some adventurous driving may be needed and body damage is possible!)

Trail Info:

Camp, fish and relax in remote seclusion after a day of challenging rock crawling. Despite damage from recent fires, this is a great place to spend a weekend exploring a gorgeous high plateau with numerous glacier - carved lakes. Although much of this trail is moderate, one difficult spot before Waypoint 05 will stop most stock vehicles. We managed to get through with our stock 4-door Rubicon, but just barely. You’ll find tight spots between trees with large tree roots. F.S. 608 to Morris Lake is extreme rock crawling.

For those that want to convoy up together from the South Bay here is my current plan. The goal is to get in early and nab a good campsite.

Drive up itinerary from the South Bay:

06:45 - Meet at the Arco Gas Station off of Abbot 43 S Abbott Ave, Milpitas, CA 95035

07:00 - Depart for the High Lakes

09:00 - 9:30 - Stopover in Yuba City for gas and possibly meetup with anyone heading up from Sacramento 1129 N Beale Rd, Marysville, CA 95901

11:15 - Arrive at Butte Meadows Mercantile & Resort (Last Gas before heading in) We can grab some lunch here and then head into the trails.

12:30 - Depart to head into the High Lakes OHV area.

So.... how challenged would a bone stock RRC be?... asking for a friend

I do not expect you will find much of an issue. Stock the classics still have pretty good ground clearance and it sounds like the forest service has been doing maintenance back in the high lakes area and most of the harder areas have been filled with gravel.

We plan to meet up for the early morning convoy with Miles. I’ll probably be taking the L322 since I am still waiting on a delivery of power steering fluid for the D2.

You know they sell it in O'Reillys?  Oh, it leaks so bad that you need a 55 gallon drum?  Got it!

Regards,

Graeme

Anyone bringing kids?

I’m trying to see if I can squeeze this in Saturday to Sunday or Saturday for the day...if others have younger kids this might make it easier to do.

Sorry to say but I'm not going to be able to make this trip.

Bummer - I was looking forward to catching up. We will see you on the next one!

Miles,

I think you will find that all fires and stoves are banned currently, except in developed campgrounds.

Regards,

Graeme

Luckily I called the Almanor Ranger district and they are wonderful at confirming the exceptions ;)

Meant to post this earlier - but I wanted to double confirm.

Stoves - OK

Propane Burners - OK

Portable Fire Pits - OK

Open fires are not OK unless at a developed campground.

So for those going - if you have a portable pit I recommend you bring it along.
